FIFA Ballon d'Or Gala 2015

Football is as much a business as it is a sport nowadays, with astronomical transfer fees and third party allowances. Players themselves are paid in millions to enthrall fans all over the globe. With such high numbers in the game now, it is no surprise that the Premier League clubs pay their players, especially their star players, rather handsomely.

Let us take a look at the highest earning footballers at each of last season's top 6 clubs.

#6 Manchester United - Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba

Paul Pogba returned to Manchester United last season from Juventus in a world record £89.3 million transfer. The figures involved in that move were astronomical, none more so than the weekly wage of the French international.

Pogba earns £290,000 a week, £50,000 more than second highest earner at the club, Romelu Lukaku. The big bucks are self-explanatory though, with Pogba an integral part of the Manchester United midfield machine. With trophies already added in his first season back, he will be looking to increase his haul this season and make a mark in the Champions League.

#5 Arsenal - Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez

Two players at Arsenal share the top spot for highest earner and both their contracts end this year. While Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez are an integral part of the Gunners squad, no improvement has been made to their contractual situation and it looks like Arsenal fans have to face the prospect of letting their star men leave for free.

Both of them earn £140,000 per week, significantly lower than the highest earners of the other top 6 clubs and maybe that is why Arsenal find themselves in this difficult situation in regards to their contract discussions.

#4 Liverpool - Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League

The Liverpool playmaker was the subject of intense interest from Barcelona in the summer and it remains to be seen how much longer Liverpool can keep hold of their Brazilian wizard.

The influential midfielder earns around £150,000 per week and is in his 6th season at the club. His presence in the midfield has helped summer signing, Mo Salah, make the dazzling start he has made to the season and Liverpool fans will be hoping they keep hold of their highest earner for this season and beyond.

#3 Manchester City - Sergio Agüero and Yaya Touré

Manchester City v Liverpool - Premier League

The highest-earner spot is shared by two people at big spending Manchester City. Argentine Sergio Aguero and Ivory Coast international Yaya Toure both earn £220,000 per week.

While Toure is in the last year of his lucrative contract and very much a squad player at City now, Aguero remains central to The Citizens bid to challenge on all fronts this season. City's wage bill for the 16/17 season was £198m and the figures earned by their top stars show why that number is so big.

#2 Tottenham Hotspur - Hugo Lloris

Spurs' No.1 goalkeeper earns a reported £120,000 per week, making him their top paid player ahead of the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli. The French international, who is also club captain, has been with the club for 6 seasons.

The 30-year old has 3 years left on his current contract and one can expect that his next extension will not significantly increase his wage given he will be in his middle thirties. With Spurs vying on 4 fronts this season, their famed shot stopper will have to be at his best week in and week out.

#1 Chelsea - Eden Hazard

Chelsea v Manchester United - Premier League

Chelsea's diminutive Belgian magician dazzles fans with his trickery and skills on the pitch every week and off the pitch, pockets a cool £200,000 per week. The Premier League Player of the Year for the 2014/15 season, Hazard has enjoyed 6 trophy laden years at the London based club.

Chelsea always look a threat when he is on the pitch and his absence due to injury at the start of the season was heavily felt by the club. With Barcelona looming in the Champions League Round of 16, Chelsea fans will be hoping their highest paid player will be at his absolute best to steer them on to victory.
