West Ham beat Liverpool 3-1 at Boleyn Ground on Staurday night to hand the Reds their third defeat in five Premier League games.
Winston Reid, Diafra Sakho and Morgan Amalfitano scored for the Hammers with only Raheem Sterling scoring a consolation goal for Liverpool.
Although Brendan Rodgers’ side had a majority of the possession (62%), it was West Ham who capitalized whenever they had the ball with 13 shots on goal, seven of which were on target.
West Ham 1-0 Liverpool: Reid (2’)
The Hammers took an early lead through a set piece. A free kick from the right flank was sent toward the far post where James Tomkins rose above his marker to head the ball across goal. Reid only had to head it home from three yards out to give West Ham the lead.
West Ham 2-0 Liverpool: Sakho (7’)
They got the second goal in the seventh minute to immediately put pressure on Liverpool early in the game. This time, Sakho looked like he was crossing the ball from the right side of the box. But the cross turned into a lob that went over Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet who misjudged it completely. He could only look on helplessly as the ball went into the goal.
West Ham 2-1 Liverpool: Sterling (26’)
Liverpool pegged one back in the first half through Raheem Sterling. Mario Balotelli received a flighted ball near the penalty spot, controlled it, turned and took a shot. But it was blocked by Aaron Cresswell. The rebound fell to Sterling who took his shot first time from the edge of the box and drilled a low shot into the bottom left corner.
West Ham 3-1 Liverpool: Amalfitano (88’)
With Liverpool searching for an equalizer to go away with at least one point, West Ham fans breathed a sigh of relief when ex-Liverpool player Stewart Downing threaded a sublime through ball for Amalfitano to score with a shot into the bottom right corner and put the game out of reach.Published 21 Sep 2014, 09:45 IST
