LONDON - Chelsea became the first defending champions to be eliminated from the Champions League at the group phase despite thrashing FC Nordsjaelland 6-1 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

In order to go through, Chelsea needed to win and hope Juventus lost at Shakhtar Donetsk in the other Group E game, but the Italian champions won 1-0 to take their place in the last 16.
