Mesut Ozil has often disappeared in the big games

Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy claims that Arsenal’s record signing Mesut Ozil is overrated and the German does not have an impact on the big games. Cundy made 41 appearances for Chelsea between 1988 and 1992 and currently works as a pundit for Talksport. He says that Ozil doesn’t deserve to be labelled world class and is not even the best player in the Gunners squad.

“Aside from not being world class, he isn’t even the best player at his club right now as Sanchez is proving more important and I wouldn’t have him anywhere near Chelsea,” Cundy told Football Fanzone.

“When I say this I don't say it lightly but Arsenal's Mesut Ozil is the most overrated player in the Premier League. I was asked who I would take between him and Dele Alli prior to the North London derby, give me Alli all day. At least he has a backbone and heart for the fight.”

The 28-year-old recently scored a sublime goal against Ludogorets in the Champions League which helped Arsenal to secure all three points. He lobbed the goalkeeper and left two defenders for dead before slotting the ball home, an effort that showcased the German’s prowess on the ball, but Cundy has a different perspective on it.

"Last week we were forced to bow to the midfielder because he scored a wonder goal against a bunch of Bulgarian farmers to complete an Arsenal comeback but why were Arsenal losing 2-0 in the first place? Who on earth are Ludogorets that we should be getting so excited?” Cundy said.

Ozil has drawn criticism throughout his Arsenal career for his inefficiency to make a mark on the big games. However, stats show that the former Werder Bremen player is becoming Arsenal’s man for the occasion as he had 8 goals and 20 assists to his name in all competitions last season. He provided two assists in the games against Leicester City and Manchester City. He was also one of Arsenal’s best players against rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

The German has taken his game to a whole new level this season as he is getting into scoring positions more often and has already bagged 7 goals this season including his first senior hat-trick.

Despite the fact that Ozil has been the recipient of some harsh criticism, he has always been praised by his managers and team-mates for his brilliance on the ball and extraordinary vision. Ozil arrived at the Emirates in the 2013 summer transfer window for a club record £42.5 million and has won two FA Cups with the Gunners.
