Is this the reason why Mourinho wants Rooney at Chelsea?

Chelsea wait in the wings…

The more I think about it, especially after Jose Mourinho spoke of the strikers we currently have at the club, the more I can see Wayne Rooney pushing through a move to Chelsea before the close of the transfer window. So, what is the reason behind Rooney being his main transfer target? I will explain it with the answer below.

Think back to the 2004/5 season, the first season Jose was here. The first couple of games he started with a diamond formation with Didier Drogba and Eidur Gudjohnsen as the two strikers up front. As we all can remember, not long into that first season, Didier Drogba suffered an injury that kept him on the sidelines for a sustained period of time. Although we had Mateja Kezman as a third striker, Mourinho switched to a 4-3-3 formation and Eidur Gudjohnsen flourished.

It’s my opinion that Eidur Gudjohnsen is up there with the best of them when he was at his peak in those two seasons at Chelsea. He quite literally had it all. He could score the easiest of goals and create something out of nothing. He could dribble, run with the ball, hold it up, play other people in and head the ball. All this in addition to having such a fantastic first touch of the ball, Eidur Gudjohnsen was a complete forward. As soon as Gudjohnsen played through the middle with Arjen Robben and Damian Duff playing either side of him, Chelsea’s season under Mourinho really took off and we all watched Chelsea step up to a whole new level.

There is an argument that ever since, we haven’t had someone like Gudjohnsen here with the closest comparison being Didier Drogba but in saying that, he isn’t the same player is he?

So what of Wayne Rooney? Well, I believe he is the same as Gudjohnsen. He has the same qualities and ability. People talk of Rooney’s class but I cannot underestimate just how good Eidur was.Rooney can be the link man for Chelsea. He can provide Jose Mourinho with everything that Gudjohnsen did back in those days. He can score the simplest goals, goals from nothing and can create chances for others.

As we all know, Rooney can put himself about it too whether it’s on the deck or in the air. He can pick a pass and at 27 or 28 would be in his prime.

Whether or not Mourinho would have to change Chelsea’s formation and playing style to accommodate Rooney is another thing but surely he has to be a benefit to the football club.

I believe that Wayne Rooney can be as good for Chelsea as Eidur Gudjohnsen was in that specialist position and that is the reason he has become our prime transfer target this season.
