Netherlands Player Ratings

Donny van de Beek scored his first ever international goal
Donny van de Beek scored his first ever international goal

Jasper Cillessen - 7/10

Cillessen made a couple of great saves to deny Immobile, and keep the Dutch in the game. He also made a crucial intervention in the dying seconds of the match, when he came charging out to clear a ball with Moise Kean ready to run onto it.

Hans Hateboer - 5/10

Hateboer was given a torrid time by Spinazzola. In his "home" ground in Bergamo, Hateboer had an evening to forget, as he couldn't make a significant impact on the game in an attacking sense either.

Stefan de Vrij - 6/10

De Vrij provided decent support to Hateboer, who was struggling defensively. He did get caught out of position for the Italy goal though, as he let Pellegrini get away from him.

Virgil van Dijk - 7/10

The Dutch captain was near his best in this game. He was imperios aerially, and generally dealt really well with Immobile. He also brought the ball out of the back with aplomb, to set off Netherlands attacks.

Nathan Ake - 5/10

Ake was the weakest of the three Dutch centre-halves on the night. He had problems dealing with the pace of Chiesa throughout the game.

Daley Blind - 7/10

Blind was very good going forward. He put the ball into the box that eventually led to the Dutch equaliser. He should have also had another assist, but Luuk de Jong failed to put an easy harder in the back of the net.

Frenkie de Jong - 8/10

The Barcelona man was the best player on the pitch, both teams considered. After a slow start, he grew into the game magnificently, and then bossed the midfield on his own. To do that against a side as good as Italy would give him much-needed confidence to take into his club form.

Georginio Wijnaldum - 4/10

Wijnaldum was slow, lethargic and just bereft of ideas in midfield. He was the most often the most advanced midfielder for the Dutch, but his lack of imagination in the final third was a big hindrance. He also should have done way better than the shot he rolled harmlessly wide in the last few minutes of the game.

Donny van de Beek - 7/10

This was a rare start for van de Beek for the Oranje, and he made full use of it. He scored his first goal for his country, with a superb finish that gave Donnarumma no chance in goal.

Luuk de Jong - 4/10

De Jong didn't have a great game. He was defended excellently by CHiellini and Bonucci. When the big chance came his way, he spurned it, as he put an easy header wide, when he was unmarked and had the goal at his mercy.

Memphis Depay - 5/10

Depay had a great chance early in the second half, when he was denied by a brilliant fingertip save from Donnarumma. He was not very good in the game though, with his dribbling being a particular sour note.

Substitutes

Joel Veltman - 6/10

He came on to replace Blind for the last 20 minutes of the match, and made a couple of crucial clearing headers at the back post.

Ryan Babel - N/A

Babel replaced Memphis with 90 seconds left to play.
