Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has revealed that Brendan Rodgers attempted to snap up Arjen Robben, before the Champions League final at Wembley in 2013.

Rodgers had just finished off his first season at Liverpool and led the side to a lowly seventh place in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich were looking to complete a treble and faced German rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final at Wembley.

The man who popped up with the winner was Arjen Robben in that game, slotting home a late goal to give the Bavarian giants the most coveted club prize in the world.

Robben has since gone on to become a vital player for Bayern and his performances at this summer’s World Cup have once again highlighted just what a great player he is.

Robben, labelled a cheat by Mexico manager Miguel Herrera for diving against them, was a target for Liverpool according to Jamie Carragher.

Carragher told reporters: ‘Brendan Rodgers tried to sign him for Liverpool before the 2013 Champions League final.

‘He wasn’t a regular for Bayern then but he scored the winner at Wembley against Borussia Dortmund and has since gone from strength to strength.

‘Liverpool have not had a world class wide man since John Barnes.’
