Joe Allen: The missing piece in the puzzle for Liverpool FC

Joe Allen in the Anfield director’s box

Liverpool dominated Gomel in an easy 3-0 victory with terrific performances from Gerrard, Suarez and Borini. The three complemented each other very well in a 4-3-3 combination with Gerrard playing behind the striker. The home supporters got a glimpse of the tiki-taka style of football that Brendan Rodgers is known for. The match was being seen by someone whom the commentators called “still a Swansea player”, Joe Allen.

When a non-club player sits in the director’s box of a football club, it could only imply two things; he is either a club legend who has come to see his former club play in his free time, or a player who wants to see the club play before signing for them. Allen definitely fits in the second category. With Lucas Leiva yet to return to the same level of football he played before the injury, and Gerrard’s injury concerns, Liverpool could be found wanting a top class midfielder. Shelvey and Henderson still have long way to go, if they have to replicate Gerrard’s feats. In this state, Joe Allen’s signing could mean a lot for the club moving forward.

Joe Allen played in the central midfield role for Swansea, and knows Brendan Rodgers from his Swansea days. He is known for his ball distribution, and his defensive abilities. He plays deep in the midfield, and also has a knack of scoring goals. He had a pass completion rate of 91%, which is very high, compared to other midfielders in the Premier League last season. He, along with Sigurdsson, were the pillars of the kind of football Swansea played last season. He will certainly be a fantastic addition to the current Liverpool squad and the 15mn pounds that Swansea are quoting for him certainly seems worth it. He is only 22, and certainly has his best days ahead him. He will not only strengthen the Liverpool squad but also provide competition for Shelvey, Adam, Henderson, and Spearing.

Unlike his predecessor Kenny Dalglish, Brendan Rodgers spoke openly about his transfer plans, and admitted after the match that Allen’s signing was “imminent”, and could happen in the “next 24 hours “. Allen could be just what Liverpool need – the missing piece in their midfield jigsaw.
