Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho stated that he had striker Demba Ba’s transfer personally blocked after he heard that Mesut Ozil signed for Arsenal.

The Gunners had made a deadline-day move for the Senegal international with the aim of signing him on a season-long loan, but the transfer was cancelled by Mourinho when reports confirmed that Ozil signed for Arsenal.

“I did not accept Arsenal’s offer for Demba Ba because added to their signing of Ozil, they would have been title contenders,” Mourinho said.

Ozil was managed by Mourinho at Real Madrid, and the Chelsea boss heaped praise on the 24-year-old, comparing him to Madrid’s greatest players.

“Ozil is unique, there is no copy of him, not even a bad one,” he said.

“He is the best No. 10 in the world. He made things easier for me and his team-mates with his vision of the game and the decisions that he made.

“Everybody loves him and you can see a bit of [Luis] Figo and [Zinedine] Zidane in him.”

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had made the signing of a striker a top priority in the summer, and with Lukas Podolski out with an injury and Giroud his only available striker, he was forced to cancel the sale of Nicklas Bendtner.
