Jose Mourinho eyes reunion with Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira at Chelsea

Chelsea have already brought in Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, and now the club are considering a move for Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira after the World Cup, according to the Daily Mirror.

Jose Mourinho knows Khedira well from his spell in charge at the Bernabeu. Mourinho did not see eye-to-eye with all of his Madrid players during his time there, but he had a very good relationship with the 27-year-old, and the German midfielder has even described himself as a “Mourinho disciple”.

Chelsea have sold David Luiz to PSG this summer, and Frank Lampard has left at the end of his contract, which means Chelsea are in the market for another midfielder, despite the arrival of Fabregas.

Mourinho is looking at players who can contribute to the first-team immediately for next season. Khedira is comfortable in a holding or box-to-box role, and Chelsea see him as a player who can bring power and experience to their midfield, alongside Nemanja Matic, Ramires, and Fabregas.

Khedira suffered a serious knee injury last season, which kept him out from November until May and put his World Cup place in doubt. In his absence, Luka Modric excelled in midfield for Madrid. He has one year left on his current contract, and is reported to be available for around £15 million. His annual salary of £3 million would also be improved upon with a move to Stamford Bridge.

Khedira has also been linked with Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Liverpool, though Chelsea would hope the chance to work with Mourinho again would be a decisive factor.

He is currently part of the Germany squad in Brazil, and has started both of their games so far.
