Jose Mourinho: Fernando Torres is finally “Enjoying His Football”

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho praised striker Fernando Torres for his recent run of goalscoring form, whilst also pointing to improvements in the former Liverpool man’s all round play. Torres scored in yesterday’s 2-0 win over Hull City, following on from his goal in the New Years Day victory over Southampton. Having gone without an away goal in the Premier League in 2013 the Spaniard has now scored in back to back away game, leading Mourinho to praise his contribution in his post match interview.

“Fernando scored against Southampton, now he has scored again. He is enjoying his football more than the last couple of years,” Mourinho said.

“The goals are coming and he is doing what we want him to do: press defenders, hold the ball, wait for support, get behind defenders and he scored.

“It is important for him but more important for us.”

Mourinho also praised the club’s fans for their role in supporting Torres, drawing parallels with a similar situation experienced during the Portuguese boss’s first spell in charge of the club.

“Chelsea fans are like this. I remember in 2004 when we had Mateja Kezman and he scored his first (league) goal in December, but every time playing at Stamford Bridge people were supporting him.”

“It helps players, especially in a difficult moment. Players do not feel the heat when things are not going well for them.”

Torres has scored the same number of Premier League goals in his last two games as he managed in the 790 minutes of Premier League football played before that.
