Jose Mourinho fined by the FA for post-match comments

Jose Mourinho Chelsea ban
The FA have slapped Mourinho with a £50,000 fine

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been handed a £50,000 fine in relation to his comments following the 3-1 loss to Southampton as the FA confirmed. In addition, a one-match suspension could be given to the Portuguese manager if he continues to make such comments or irks the FA with his behaviour over the next year.

The FA statement read: “It was alleged his remarks constituted improper conduct in that they alleged and/or implied bias on the part of a match official or match officials and/or brought the game into disrepute.

“Mr Mourinho’s suspended stadium ban will be immediately invoked should he be found by an Independent Regulatory Commission to have committed a further breach of FA Rule E3 for any comment or statement to or through the media before 13 October 2016.”

This hasn’t been the first time the manager has run into trouble with the FA. This time it was for his rant after his side lost out against Ronald Koeman’s Southampton side at Stamford Bridge. It was the latest edition in Chelsea’s poor start to the season that has frustrated the manager.

Against the Saints, Mourinho complained once again about the decisions that did not go in his side’s favour.

“I think it is time to be honest and say clearly that referees are afraid to give decisions to Chelsea,” Mourinho said.

“At 1-1 there is a huge penalty and once more we do not get it. It was at a crucial moment in the game. I repeat, if the FA wants to punish me they can punish me, it is not a problem.”

It seemed like he was almost goading the English FA into punishing him. The authorities charged him the next day after the comments were made and gave him time to respond. Now they announced their decision, but it hasn’t really come as a surprise to anyone.

Mourinho’s primary concern will, however, be the game against Aston Villa this weekend. The Blues have registered only 8 points in as many games so far. A start that has been less than pleasant for the reigning champions. Their only wins so far came against West Brom and Arsenal in the league but neither performance would be deemed convincing.

Now as all players return after the international break, Chelsea will look to bounce back and rejuvenate their campaign. It’s being touted as Mourinho’s toughest test so far as many believe he could be sacked if he fails to turn this around despite the club publicly releasing a statement backing their boss.
