Wenger: Favours Brendan Rodgers and Tony Pulis over Jose Mourinho for Premier League manager of the year

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes there are plenty of candidates in the running for Premier League Manager of the Year but Jose Mourinho is not one of them.

Chelsea have ended the season without a trophy in Mourinho’s first season back in charge, despite the Blues winning the FA Cup, Champions League and Europa League in the two season’s prior.

They could be set to finish third as well, behind Liverpool and Manchester City, if the Reds better their result on the final day of the season. The Blues could have had a greater say on the title race had they not dropped silly points to teams like Sunderland, Norwich City and Aston Villa.

Brendan Rodgers and Tony Pulis are thought to be the favourites for the award, as well as others in the running, but Wenger would not include Mourinho.

“We have plenty of candidates,” Wenger said. ”We have two kinds of candidates, those who win the league and those who don’t go down.“Amongst those who don’t go down you have [Tony] Pulis, [Steve] Bruce, [Gus] Poyet now who has done a magnificent job [at Sunderland] because he got to a cup final as well.

“Then after that you have [Manuel] Pellegrini who will win the league. Or Brendan Rodgers who has done remarkably well because Liverpool also play a very attractive game.”
