Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski has finally broken the silence over the transfer saga surrounding him in recent times. The Polish international has one year left on his contract and has been a transfer target for both the English champions Manchester United and Champions League winners Bayern Munich.
The 24-year-old striker has already decided to leave the Signal Iduna Park in the summer, with the Champions League finalists still hopeful of retaining Lewandowski for yet another season. However, the Pole is still calm as he is hopeful the situation will change in the next few days.
“I do not think that this is the final decision of the board of directors and I expect the situation to change shortly. I am enjoying my holiday for now, but I hope things move forward pretty soon and the situation changes. I do not get upset about anything,” said Lewandowski, as quoted in Sky Sports.
The Pole’s comments come just a day after Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke revealed the German giants will not allow Lewandowski to make a switch to Allainz Arena in the summer.
“Robert Lewandowski will definitely not transfer to Bayern Munich in 2013. This is final. We have informed Robert and his advisers. The Bayern case is closed because there was no written offer. I am not saying he will definitely stay but he will certainly not be playing for Bayern in 2013. I don’t think that’s a definitive decision taken by the president. I still think it will change,” Watzke told German newspaper Bild.
Lewandowski has proved his worth at both domestic and at the European stage, which is the reason why the top clubs from the continent are after his services. The striker has bagged 35 goals and managed 10 assists in all competitions.
Should United’s incoming manager David Moyes land Lewandowski in the summer, it will bolster the Premier League champions’ attacking division. At the same time, the Polish international could be an ideal replacement for the Red Devils’ wantaway striker Wayne Rooney, who has already handed in his second transfer request in the last three years.
