What's the story?

After a winless US pre-season tour, Liverpool defender, Joel Matip believes that there is still a lot of work to do in the team before the start of the next season.

In case you didn't know...

Liverpool's US pre-season tour ended in a disappointment as the Reds failed to register a single win in any of their three games.

The Merseysiders were defeated 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund in their first game of the trip before Sevilla produced an upset by beating the Jurgen Klopp's troops 2-1 at the Fenway Park on July 22.

The Reds' final game of the tour bought another disappointment as they were held on to 2-2 draw by Sporting CP at the Yankee Stadium earlier today.

The heart of the matter

Speaking to Liverpool's official site, Matip said that there is still a lot of work to do in the team before the start of the next season.

He said:

It was an intense period with good opponents and we worked hard to get a better fitness level and to get back in the mood.
"We still have a lot of work to do and we are working hard. I'm looking forward and we are confident.
"We know it's a long way to go and we still have a lot to improve, but we're on a good way."

Joel Matip impressed with his performances alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of Liverpool's defence last season and played a vital role in the Reds' Champions League success. The 27-year-old featured in two of the Reds' three tour games but he looked short of the full match-fitness.

What's next?

The UEFA Champions League 2018-19 winners will now head to Scotland to play Napoli at the Murrayfield Stadium in a pre-season friendly game on Jul 28.
