Liverpool’s pursuit of Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno may have hit a stumbling block after the Anfield club poured cold water on speculation that the Spanish international has flown to Merseyside for a medical.

According to the Telegraph, reports in spain suggest that the clubs have agreed a fee of £16.2 million and Moreno had travelled to England with his father and agent to complete a medical. Sources close to Anfield, however, insist a fee is yet to be agreed as the two clubs’ valuation of the 21-year-old is “miles apart”.

“All I know is that I’ve been a Sevillista since I was a kid. My future? I do not know about that,” Moreno said.

“That’s a matter for my father and my agent to deal with. I have four years I am dedicated to play and I’m happy here.”

Brendan Rodgers has highlighted his defence as an area he needs to fortify during the close season as Liverpool prepare for their first campaign back in the Champions League since 2009/10. Moreno is one of his primary targets but having been in talks for the past two weeks, there has been no progress in negotiations.

Sevilla have since inflated their asking price to £18 million in a bid to keep Liverpool waiting but the Premier League side are not budging. Moreno didn’t make Spain’s World Cup squad so discussions can continue without interruption but there is no doubt Liverpool will want to get a deal over the line as soon as possible.

In January, they missed out on Willian to Chelsea at the last minute despite agreeing a fee with Anzhi and they’ll be wary of a similar outcome with Moreno with Sevilla reportedly contacting other clubs including Tottenham Hotspur.

Rodgers’ approach may be down to the fact he has several other players of similar ilk lined up. Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand, who Rodgers worked with at Stamford Bridge, is a possibility while Dejan Lovren has been linked with a move from Southampton.

The Telegraph believe Sevilla want the bulk of the fee paid upfront in addition to a series of clauses to be added to any potential contract. Moreno has made three senior appearances for Spain and despite being included in Vicente del Bosque’s 30-man provisional Spain squad for the World Cup, he failed to make the cut with Arsenal’s Nacho Monreal preferred instead.
