Liverpool transfer rumour: Jurgen Klopp rekindles interest in Porto star Hector Herrera

Hector Herrera: Klopp’s latest target?

Liverpool are preparing to go back for their summer target Hector Herrera when the transfer window reopens in January. The Reds were keeping close tabs on the player during the summer transfer window, but they ended up signing other players, and Herrera stayed at Porto.

If reports from the Portuguese media are to be believed, then the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is still interested in signing the 26-year-old midfielder. The German manager is looking for a cover for Sadio Mane when the latter leaves for Africa Cup of Nations at the end of January. Moreover, he also lost Danny Ings for the season with another ACL injury. Hence, Klopp has turned his attention back to his former target.

Herrera started his career playing for the youth sides of Pachuca, in 2010. He spent three years at the club before he moved to FC Porto in June 2013 in a deal worth €8m. The player has 20 goals and 22 assists to his credit since joining Porto. He played at the international level since 2012, helping Mexico win the Olympic Gold Medal in 2012 and was also an important part of the Mexico’s winning team at the 2015 Gold Cup. Herrera also represented his country at the 2014 World Cup.

A classic box-to-box midfielder, Herrera is good at halting advances from the opposing players as well as in creating opportunities by distributing ball or shooting a goal. One of the important players in Porto’s midfield, he had a pivotal role to play in the team’s performances last year. The Mexican midfielder will be a good fit for the Reds manager with Mexican being good in attack as well as defence. Herrera will be an excellent cover for Mane if he does move to the Merseyside club this winter.

The Mexican midfielder was also tracked by Manchester United during the summer, and Jose Mourinho too may rekindle his interest in the player, as he is not happy with his midfield situation. The Portuguese manager is looking for a player to partner Pogba, and he may turn his attention back to Herrera. Further, Liverpool may also face competition from Napoli who are also looking out to sign the player this winter. As such the player’s future appears to be away from Estadio do Dragao.

Herrera has a £35m release clause in his contract at Porto.
