Liverpool v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League

A game full of controversy wherein we saw two wonder goals, and a match of the year contender. When Spurs visited Anfield almost two years ago, both the teams were fighting to cement their place in the top 4. The visitors had not won at Anfield since 2011, and a strong Spurs team were hoping to change that in this game.

The in-form Mohamed Salah found the back of the net in the 3rd minute of the game, and fans had to wait till the 80th minute to see another goal as Victor Wanyama unleashed a rocket strike from almost 30 yards out to beat Loris Karius. Seven minutes later, Spurs were awarded a penalty - Harry Kane stepped up, but he missed. Three minutes later at the start of stoppage time, Salah scored one of the goals of the season as he masterfully cut past almost the entire Spurs backline to score past a helpless Hugo Lloris.

Four minutes later, Spurs were yet again awarded a penalty, albeit a very controversial one as Virgil van Dijk was adjudged to have fouled Kane. The Spurs striker stepped up again, and this time duly dispatched his kick past Karius to earn his team a hard-fought draw at Anfield.

#5 Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 Liverpool, 22nd October 2017

A memorable win for Spurs, the start of a new era for Liverpool
A memorable win for Spurs, the start of a new era for Liverpool

Many Liverpool fans consider this game to be the one which kickstarted their dominance under Jurgen Klopp. When the Reds visited White Hart Lane in October of 2017, they were placed 9th in the league and things were not looking very bright at Merseyside. Spurs, on the other hand, were placed third and had lost only one of their last 16 games.

Spurs' hot form continued against their "top 6" opponents as the home team dismantled the opponents 4-1. Harry Kane and co tormented the Liverpool defence in the first half as Dejan Lovren was subbed off at the half-hour mark, by which point the home team had scored twice. Mohamed Salah's goal proved to be a mere consolation as Spurs hit two goals again in the second half and won the game comfortably.

Both teams ended the season in the top 4, and this game served to "awaken" Liverpool as they reached the Champions League final that season.
