Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that Real Madrid and Barcelona are not at their best this season, which means Manchester City could capitalize on go on to win their first Champions League title.

Pep Guardiola was appointed as the manager of Manchester City in 2016 and fast forward to the present, he has transformed them into one of the best clubs in world football.

The Cityzens won the Premier League last season and broke a number of league records in the process including - most points in a league season (100), most points ahead of the runners up (19), most goals (106), most wins in a season (32), best goal difference (+79) and most consecutive victories (18).

They are in a brilliant form this season as well and are currently at the top of the Premier League table.

However, they have never won the Champions League trophy in their history and will be looking forward to breaking the duck this season.

The heart of the matter

Speaking to BT Sport(via Mirror), former Manchester United defender believes that Manchester City can clinch their first Champions League trophy this season.

He said:

“I had City down as favourites at the beginning of the season to win this competition. I think the depth they’ve got in their squad is unrivaled in this tournament.
You see the other big teams, the Real Madrids, the Barcas, they’re not at the level they were. They’re still a good level but not the all-conquering team they were before."

He further added:

“It’s open this year but I think City are the team in the best possible position squad wise, depth wise to really capitalize on that.

What's next?

Manchester City will play Chelsea for the FA Cup final this Sunday, before hosting West Ham United at Etihad Stadium in the league on February 28.
