6 Premier League records that Manchester City have broken or might break this season

Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion - Premier League
Manchester City have run away with the Premier League title this season

It is almost certain that Manchester City will win the Premier League this season. In addition, they are on course to smash a number of league records with eight games remaining.

Pep Guardiola’s side this season has been an attacking force that any team will fear to play against, and a tally of 85 goals already scored just shows how ruthless they have been.

After an unsatisfactory season last year where they finished fourth, Pep still had the confidence that his team could do better. Restructuring the defence was a major concern that Pep focused on, and he spent big money in the summer transfer window to put things right.

His tactics are simple – possession-based quick-passing. With this style of football, teams like Barcelona and Bayern Munich ended their seasons, year after year, with cabinets filled with trophies.

So, will we see a similar situation on the blue side of Manchester? His army certainly seems to be heading in the right direction.

Guardiola lifted his first trophy in England following a 3-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final.

By the looks of it, City are on course to break many a record this season. Let us have a look at the records already broken and that can be broken by the end of the season by Manchester City.

#6 Most consecutive wins in a season

Manchester City creating history with 18 wins in a row in the Premiere League
Manchester City creating history with 18 wins in a row in the Premier League

Manchester City seems to be an altogether different unit under Pep this season. Their campaign set-off like a rocket and goal-scoring was at an all-time high. The wins just kept on coming.

Pep's attacking tactics seem to have done the trick, as they set a new record for the longest winning run in a season - 18 wins on the trot - going past Arsenal who've held this record in 2002 win 14 wins.

Apart from this, they set a new club record for themselves, for most away wins in a row with 11 victories.

Key players:

Ederson (Gk) with 14 clean sheets and a stubborn defence consisting of Nicolas Otamendi (2679 the highest number of passes in the PL this season), John Stones and Kyle Walker was one of the reasons City broke the record this season. With attackers - like Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane - who consistently got the goals up front helped their cause.

Verdict: New Premier League record.

#5 Most goals in a season

Middlesbrough v Manchester City - Premier League
South American strike force - Sergio Aguero & Gabriel Jesus

With South American strikers like Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus in attack, what more can we expect? To add to that, City have Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling who are equally efficient goal-scorers.

Sergio Aguero is at his usual best, season after season. Consistent! He is third in the goal scoring charts with 21 goals and became Man City’s all-time leading goal scorer earlier this season.

Raheem Sterling has also been instrumental in getting vital goals when required and has 15 against his name, just one below Aguero at number four. Gabriel Jesus who had an amazing start to the season bagged eight goals before picking up an injury, which ruled him out for 3 months. He is back in the squad and we can expect his boots to do the talking for the remainder of the season.

Manchester City have been among the top goal-scoring teams in the past decade, but the all-time Premiere League record for goals scored in a season is held by Chelsea’s title winning team from the 2009-10 season.

Nevertheless, with the form the Sky Blues from Manchester are in, they certainly are on course to smash this record as well.

Carlo Ancelotti managed the Blues who scored 103 goals in the double-winning season back then. City currently average 2.8 goals per game, a scoring rate that will see them hit 107 goals by the end of the season if they maintain their irresistible form.

Key players: The attacking force of Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling, David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne are to be held responsible for this offensive feat.

Prediction: Goals galore with the scoring game on-point for City might see the record get broken.

#4 Most points in a season

Liverpool v Manchester City - Premier League
Leroy Sane & Kevin De Bruyne - Manchester City midfield duo

Man City would have still been unbeaten, if only had they not to lost to Liverpool in January. They lost out on a chance for a Golden Premier League trophy and the term, "Invincibles" (a feat achieved by Arsenal in the 2003-04 season of the Premier League).

But with the astounding form City are in, they have won 5 of their previous 6 games. With only eight games to go, Man City seem to be on course to break Chelsea’s record of 95 points in a season, which the Blues accomplished during the 2004-05 season.

City on course for a 100-points season

From the remaining fixtures, United and Spurs ought to be tough competition and they may drop points against the two. Averaging at 2.7 points per game in game week 30, they could definitely hit the 100-point mark and set a new Premiere League record.

Key players: Finishing fourth last season surely did not go down well with Pep. He isn't used to not winning trophies and this was a test for him. But what do great managers do in such a situation? They come back stronger. Man City as a team have made this happen and we can give credit to the entire squad for this, especially Guardiola. His tactics this season have proven how good a manager he can be.

Prediction: A remarkable 100-point season is in the offing!

#3 Most wins in a season

Manchester City v AFC Bournemouth - Premier League
Pep Guardiola - Manchester City manager

Antonio Conte had a dream start to his Chelsea managerial career. The Italian won the title in his debut season in England, giving Chelsea their second league title in three years with a 13-match winning streak that helped them win 30 of the 38 fixtures.

Pep’s City have eight games to go and with five wins in any of those games, they can set a new record for securing the most wins in a Premiere League season. Guardiola’s side has a win rate of 86.66 percent this season and if they maintain it, they look certain to end the 2017/18 season with another record to their name.

Key Players: Credit for this should be shared not only by Aguero and Jesus, but Sterling, D. Silva, Sane and de Bruyne as well. They have been the driving force behind City reaching the top of the Premier League table. With eight games to go, Pep will be hoping they continue to deliver and make this a memorable and record-breaking season for the team.

Prediction: 5 wins away to claim another record? Seems likely!

#2 Biggest title-winning margin

Manchester United v Manchester City - Premier League
Star-studded Manchester City squad

If Manchester City continue to win games at the rate they have all campaign, they could end the season on 105 points. This would put them in with a chance of breaking the record for biggest margin between first and second placed teams in the Premiere League table at the end of the campaign.

Manchester United set this record in 1999-00 when they finished 18 points clear of Arsenal to win the title. Second place United are 16 points behind their noisy neighbors. Though they still have bragging rights to play for, with a Manchester derby scheduled in April.

City are on top of the table with 81 points, and eight games to go. Looking at their points-per-game ratio, which is 2.7 points till game week 30, they are predicted to gather another 21 from 24. That makes it seven wins from eight.

City can end the season beating United's record if they continue their winning streak and possibly hope that United drop a few points in the remainder of their fixtures.

Key players: As astounding as it may sound, Man City are on another level this season. If they do win with a record margin, that won't be it. They may be crowned champions with six games to spare and that is another record altogether. Then again with Pep's brilliance, this side has lived up to his expectations in the Premiere League. Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Nicolas Otamendi and Ederson have to be given credit for it as well.

Prediction: On course, but will have to wait till the end of the season to find out.

#1 Best goal difference in a season

Manchester City v Southampton - Premier League
Rock solid defense; Lethal finishers - Manchester City

When Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea won their 2009-10 Premiere League campaign scoring a record breaking 103 goals, they had only conceded 32 times. The goal difference was an incredible +71. That is still the record for the best goal difference in a Premiere League campaign, but if City breaks the most goals scored total this year they should also loosen Chelsea's hold on this record.

With eight games to go and with a goal difference of +65, City are definitely capable of bagging this record too. City have conceded 20 goals all season. As predicted they can go on to score 107 goals and most likely will concede only a few. Ederson Moraes has 14 clean sheets, only one behind David De Gea who has 15 against his name.

Well this too can change and Ederson may even grab the Golden Glove if he manages to do better than the Spaniard in the next eight fixtures. Another accolade for the Sky Blues of Manchester.

Key players: Ederson (Gk) has to be given credit for this one as he has been a wall in front of goal. Assisted by Otamendi, Stones and Walker, this City defence is a tough nut to crack. Conceding only 20 goals (best in the league) so far in 30 games played, they are almost certain to make this record their own. Not forgetting, their attacking forces of Aguero, Jesus, Sane and Sterling.

Prediction: All bets on City as they seem on course to break Chelsea's record.
