Manchester City might’ve missed out on their third successive Premier League title, but their fans are probably still happy right now. That’s because this week, the club have been able to overturn UEFA’s decision to ban them from European football for two years.

Had the ban been upheld, City could well have risked losing some of their best players. Now though, not only will they stay, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Pep Guardiola spend big in the transfer market again.

City have been one of the world’s biggest-spending clubs ever since their takeover by the Abu Dhabi Group in 2008. Therefore it should come as no surprise to find out that their players are some of the highest-earning in the world.

Here, we take a look at the wages of Manchester City’s current first-team squad for the 2019-20 campaign.

#20 Oleksandr Zinchenko (Defender) - £20,000 per week

Reportedly the lowest earner in City’s first team is defender Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian international was signed by City back in 2016 but broke into the first team in the 2017-18 season. Since then, he’s largely been deployed in a left-back role.

Zinchenko has made 23 appearances thus far this season, and while he may not have his first-team spot nailed down, his £20k-per-week contract runs until 2024. That means the 23-year old has plenty of time to establish himself as a regular at the Etihad.

#19 Phil Foden (Midfielder) - £30,000 per week

A rare example of an academy player who’s been able to break into City’s starting XI, Phil Foden reportedly makes £30k per week on his current deal. The attacking midfielder is still just 20 years old, and yet Pep Guardiola has already described him as the most talented player he’s ever seen.

Since the 2019-20 season restarted, Foden has been playing an increasingly big role for City. He’s now made 33 appearances in all competitions and has scored 7 goals. With David Silva set to depart the Etihad in the summer, this talented youngster should only gain more prominence next season.

#18 Ederson (Goalkeeper) - £65,000 per week

Ederson has established himself as one of the Premier League's best goal

Given his importance to the cause at City, it’s a surprise that goalkeeper Ederson isn’t paid more. However, given that he signed a contract extension in the summer of 2018 to keep him at the Etihad until 2025, he may actually be making more money than has been reported here.

Renowned as one of the world’s best keepers, Ederson has won two Premier League titles since his arrival in Manchester. His skills with the ball at his feet are so good that it’s been suggested he could even play outfield if required.

#17 Joao Cancelo (Defender) - £80,000 per week

Signed by City in the summer of 2019, it’s fair to suggest that Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo hasn’t quite made his mark on their first team yet. The 26-year old has made just 15 Premier League appearances thus far in the current campaign and remains behind veteran Kyle Walker in the pecking order.

With another five years to run on his current £80k-per-week contract, though, Cancelo has plenty of time to prove his worth with boss Pep Guardiola.

#16 Claudio Bravo (Goalkeeper) - £80,000 per week

Claudio Bravo was one of Pep Guardiola’s earliest signings at City. The Chilean goalkeeper was brought in during the summer of 2016 for his skills with the ball at his feet, but his first season didn’t go to plan. A series of costly gaffes saw him lose his #1 spot to new signing Ederson the following summer.

Bravo remains at the Etihad as an extremely high-level backup, though. This season has seen him make 17 appearances across all competitions, and with a weekly salary of £80k per week, it’s unlikely that he can have too many complaints.

#15 Benjamin Mendy (Defender) - £90,000 per week

A costly £52m signing from Monaco in the summer of 2017, France international Benjamin Mendy’s time at the Etihad has been marked by injury problems. An ACL tear ruled him out of nearly the whole 2017-18 campaign, and to date, he’s only made 51 appearances for City across all competitions.

When he’s fit, however, the 25-year old is one of the world’s most dangerous attacking full-backs. With tremendous pace and an excellent range of passing, Mendy has registered four assists this season and remains a key part of Pep Guardiola’s plans.

#14 Gabriel Jesus (Striker) - £90,000 per week

Gabriel Jesus has not yet reached his prime at City
Gabriel Jesus has not yet reached his prime at City

Upon his arrival at the Etihad in the summer of 2016, Gabriel Jesus looked like a star in the making. The Brazilian striker appeared to have all the tools to become one of the world’s premier goalscorers.

While he hasn’t quite lived up to that hype yet – largely because he hasn’t displaced veteran Sergio Aguero from City’s starting XI – he still has plenty of time. Jesus is still just 23 years old and already has a solid 65 goals under his belt at City. We should expect that figure to rise in the future as he’s given more game time.

#13 John Stones (Defender) - £100,000 per week

Could John Stones be set to depart Manchester City in the near future?

Signed by City in the summer of 2016, John Stones was expected to be the team’s main central defender for the next decade. Renowned for his passing ability and with a reputation as a modern ball-playing defender, the former Everton man looked like the ideal signing for Pep Guardiola.

However, despite winning two Premier League titles, things haven’t quite worked out for Stones at the Etihad. He’s drifted in and out of the first team due to a mixture of injuries and costly errors. Current rumours suggest he could be on the verge of a transfer – despite his £100k-per-week deal running until 2022.

#12 Kyle Walker (Defender) - £110,000 per week

Kyle Walker has been a big hit since joining City from Tottenham in 2017

An acquisition from Premier League rivals Tottenham in the summer of 2017, Kyle Walker has had plenty of success since arriving at the Etihad. The transfer handed him a major wage increase to £110k per week, and he’s largely repaid Pep Guardiola’s faith in the seasons that have followed.

Walker has practically been an ever-present for City in the last three campaigns. And while he found himself in hot water due to his behaviour during the UK’s COVID-19 lockdown, he remains a key man in Guardiola’s plans for the 2020-21 season.

#11 Nicolas Otamendi (Defender) - £120,000 per week

Like fellow defender John Stones, Nicolas Otamendi has found himself under fire this season for a handful of questionable performances. The Argentine international has made a number of errors at the heart of City’s defence, and at 32 years old, question marks hang over his future.

His £120k-per-week deal runs until the summer of 2022, but with City looking at signing at least one new centre-back this summer, his time at the Etihad may be running out.

#10 Riyad Mahrez (Forward) - £120,000 per week

One of City’s most expensive signings at £60m, Riyad Mahrez has been a big hit since arriving at the Etihad in the summer of 2018. The 2015-16 PFA Players’ Player of the Year has been a regular first-team member and has scored 24 goals in 89 appearances for City.

Currently on a deal reportedly worth £120k per week, the Algerian international is also one of City’s highest-paid stars. At 29 years old, Mahrez is probably in his prime right now, making him one of Pep Guardiola’s most dangerous attacking outlets.

#9 Aymeric Laporte (Defender) - £120,000 per week

Signed by City in January 2018, France’s Aymeric Laporte has quickly established himself as arguably the club’s most important defender. The 26-year old has the phenomenal passing ability you’d expect from a Pep Guardiola player. But he also has the simple, old-school defensive skills that ensure he keeps City’s back-line tight.

It’s no coincidence that the team’s sticky patch in the current campaign coincided with his spell on the shelf with a knee injury. After being a near ever-present in the Premier League title-winning 2018-19 campaign, Guardiola will be hoping for a similar return from him in 2020-21.

#8 Rodri (Midfielder) - £121,154 per week

City’s current record signing, Spanish midfield enforcer Rodri cost the club around €70m in the summer of 2019. And while he’s shown flashes of his tremendous potential, there’s still the feeling that the club hasn’t quite seen the best of him yet.

Seen as the heir to Fernandinho’s position as City’s holding midfielder, Rodri has made 46 appearances this season, scoring four goals and registering two assists. With City looking to reclaim their throne next season, the Spaniard will hope to become a key player for Pep Guardiola.

#7 Ilkay Gundogan (Midfielder) - £140,000 per week

Pep Guardiola’s first signing at Manchester City, midfielder Ilkay Gundogan inked a new deal in the summer of 2019 to keep him at the Etihad until 2023. The contract – reportedly worth £140k per week – takes Gundogan towards his 33rd birthday – suggesting he could end the prime of his career at the club.

The German has been an excellent acquisition for City since his arrival. He’s helped them to win six major trophies – including two Premier League titles – and has scored 22 goals there. With an ability to play practically anywhere in the midfield, he remains a key part of Guardiola’s side going into 2020-21.

#6 Bernardo Silva (Forward) - £150,000 per week

Portugal international Bernardo Silva has been an absolute revelation since joining City in the summer of 2017. The attacker won the Premier League title and EFL Cup in his first season at the Etihad, and followed that by helping City to win the domestic treble in 2018-19.

Since arriving in Manchester, Silva has scored 30 goals in 152 appearances. He’s also registered an impressive 35 assists for the side, and his ability to play from either a deeper-lying role or as a wide forward makes him one of Pep Guardiola’s key men. At just 25 years old, he may only just be reaching his prime, too.

#5 Fernandinho (Midfielder) - £150,000 per week

Brazilian international Fernandinho is heading into the final season of his £150k-per-week contract with City, and as of the time of writing, he has not signed an extension. At 35 years old he may be coming to the end of his time at the Etihad – and if that’s the case, he will definitely be missed.

A key man ever since his arrival at the club in 2013, Fernandinho will go down as one of the best holding midfielders in Premier League history. Also capable of playing in defence, the Brazilian has won three Premier League titles with City – and will look to add a fourth in his final campaign at the Etihad.

#4 David Silva (Midfielder) - £220,000 per week

This summer will mark the end of an era at Manchester City, as Spanish midfielder David Silva is set to depart the club when his £220k-per-week deal expires. Nicknamed ‘Merlin’ due to his wizardry on the ball, Silva signed with the club back in 2010 and played a huge role in ushering in the current era of success at the Etihad.

Silva has won 11 major trophies with City and has made over 400 appearances for the club. In his 10 seasons there he’s also scored 76 goals and has registered 92 assists in the Premier League alone. Essentially, he’ll go down as one of the greatest players in Premier League history.

#3 Sergio Aguero (Striker) - £230,135 per week

Sergio Aguero is one of City's greatest ever goalscorers
Sergio Aguero is one of City's greatest ever goalscorers

With a contract paying him more than £230k per week, Sergio Aguero is one of the Premier League’s highest-paid stars. It’d be hard to find a Manchester City fan who would claim the Argentine striker isn’t worth it. Since arriving at the Etihad in 2011, his goalscoring exploits have been a thing of legend.

Aguero has scored a total of 254 goals in 370 appearances – averaging more than a goal every other game. And his Premier League haul of 180 puts him fourth in the list of the competition’s all-time top goalscorers. Along the way, he’s won four Premier League titles and five domestic cups, and despite injury problems, doesn’t seem to be slowing down at all.

#2 Raheem Sterling (Forward) - £300,000 per week

Raheem Sterling is now recognised as one of City's most dangerous attackers

Despite a tricky beginning to his Manchester City career, England forward Raheem Sterling has developed into a key player for Pep Guardiola’s side. Sterling most recently inked a new deal worth around £300k per week, keeping him at the Etihad until the summer of 2023.

The last three seasons have seen Sterling develop into one of the side’s greatest goal threats. He’s improved his output from 10 goals in 2016-17 to 27 during the current campaign. One of the Premier League’s most dangerous attackers, at the age of 25 his pace, quick thinking and finishing skills are only just reaching their peak, too.

#1 Kevin De Bruyne (Midfielder) - £350,000 per week

City’s highest-paid player – reportedly earning around £350k per week – Kevin De Bruyne might also be the club’s most important player, too. The Belgian assist king is practically unrivalled in the Premier League when it comes to picking out a killer pass, and this season alone he’s registered an incredible 18 assists.

That puts him on a grand total of 64 since joining the club in the summer of 2015, but of course, assists are only one part of his game. He’s also got a penchant for scoring spectacular goals – including ones against Newcastle, Arsenal and Chelsea in the current campaign.

De Bruyne has already been named as City’s Player of the Year twice, and to see him win the award this season wouldn’t be a surprise. Simply put, he’s not only one of the Premier League’s best, He’s also one of the best players in the world.
