Manchester United 0-0 Chelsea: Player Ratings

De Gea had a brilliant game as he produced world class saves to bail United out of trouble

Manchester United were held to a 0-0 draw by Chelsea in the last game of the year at Old Trafford. The Reds Devils dominated the proceedings, but despite having a few great chances, they were unable to find the back of the net. Chelsea also came close to taking the lead a couple of times but were denied by the excellent David De Gea.

For Chelsea, it was a hard-fought draw in Guus Hiddink’s first away game in his second spell as interim manager, but for Manchester United it was another game without a win, despite the team putting in a good performance.

We take a look at the individual player ratings from the game at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Manchester United

De Gea – 9/10

Almost a perfect performance from De Gea. The Spaniard denied John Terry’s close range header with a world class save in the first half and also made a brilliant double save in the second half to deny Pedro and Azpilicueta in the space of seconds.

Matteo Darmian – 8/10

Playing at the left-side of the defense, Darmian made a few brilliant runs to cause problems for Ivanovic. He also sent in a couple of good crosses, which the Manchester United forwards failed to capitalize.

Chris Smalling – 7/10

Had a nervous moment in the first half, which the Chelsea players failed to take advantage of. Apart from that, Smalling had a good game and kept a clean sheet for his team.

Daley Blind – 7/10

Didn’t have much to do as Chelsea forwards put in a very poor performance, but Blind did his job well and kept a clean sheet for his team. He was replaced by Phil Jones in the 80th minute.

Ashley Young – 7/10

Ashley Young put in an energetic performance and put in a couple of good tackles. He also kept going forward to put in good crosses.

Morgan Schneiderlin – 8/10

Morgan Schneiderlin provided Manchester United’s midfield some much-needed steel and won the perceived midfield battle. He was later booked for a challenge on Willian.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – 6/10

Not the best game for Schweinsteiger as he didn’t look comfortable on the ball. Probably United’s weak link in the midfield, and didn’t do much to support Schneiderlin.

Juan Mata – 7/10

Mata hit the crossbar from 18 yards in the opening minutes of the game and looked like a threat in the first half. Although, he faded away in the second half and was replaced by Memphis Depay.

Ander Herrera – 6/10

Herrara came close to scoring from an Anthony Martial cross but was denied by the brilliant Thibaut Courtois. Though playing in an attacking role, more was expected from him.

Anthony Martial – 7/10

Probably Manchester United’s most consistent player this season, and he put in another good show. He was denied by the woodwork from a brilliant effort in the first half.

Wayne Rooney – 7/10

Rooney had a great chance towards the end to give Manchester United the lead, but his final effort was very poor. Also lucky not to get a red card towards the end of the game. He looked more involved today, but still needs to work hard to get his old form.

Substitutes

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson – 6/10

Good cameo. Put in an excellent cross for Rooney, which he failed to convert.

Phil Jones – N/A

Came on late, and wasn’t tested much.

Memphis Depay – N/A

Hardly had any time on the ball to make an impact

Courtois produced a match saving save off Herrera from point blank range

Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois – 8/10

Fine display from the Belgian international. Courtois made a great save off Ander Herrera in the second half to keep a clean sheet.

Branislav Ivanovic – 5/10

Ivanovic was continuously troubled by Darmian and Martial, as he put in another poor performance. United kept attacking from their left side and made him a target.

Kurt Zouma – 7/10

Zouma did his job well and kept Rooney in control for most of the game. He wasn’t supported by the midfield ahead of him but managed to keep a clean sheet in the end.

John Terry – 7/10

Terry came close to scoring on the other end but was denied by De Gea. He put in a decent show to keep a clean sheet, but could have been better aerially.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7/10

Just like Terry, Azpilicueta came close to give Chelsea the lead but was denied by the brilliant David De Gea. He looked nervous on a few occasions, and should have contributed more offensively.

John Obi Mikel – 5/10

Mikel put in a very poor performance and was Chelsea’s weak link. He did very little in the midfield and was even booked for a foul on Martial.

Nemanja Matic – 6/10

Matic had a great chance to give Chelsea the lead in the first half, but he skied his effort. He could have done better, but wasn’t supported by his midfield partner Mikel.

Willian – 7/10

Willian has been Chelsea’s best player of the season so far, but looked a bit off today. He should have capitalized on Smalling’s poor pass in the first half, but failed to create anything out of it. Otherwise a decent game for the Brazilian.

Oscar – 6/10

Oscar didn’t do much to prove he is worthy of a starting place. He seems to have lost his creative powers, and really needs to do much better.

Pedro – 5/10

Pedro was denied by David De Gea, but that was all about him in last night’s encounter. He was invisible for most of the game and put in no real effort to make an impact.

Eden Hazard – 7/10

Hazard had a couple of very good moments and looked lively. He started as a false nine and seems to be getting back to his old form.

Substitutes

Ramires – 6/10

Came on in the 69th minute to replace Willian. Ramires did well to support Ivanovic who was under pressure throughout the game.

Loftus-Cheek – N/A

Came on in stoppage time and hardly had a touch of the ball
