Bruno Fernandes' first league goal for Manchester United this season was cancelled out by a Moises Caicedo screamer as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw. United and Chelsea clashed in the Premier League on Sunday, November 3.
Following their 5-2 win over Leicester City midweek in the Carabao Cup, the Red Devils made three changes. Andre Onana returned in goal while Rasmus Hojlund and Noussair Mazraoui came in for Joshua Zirkzee and Victor Lindelof.
Chelsea, meanwhile, were coming off a loss to Newcastle United. They named a completely changed starting eleven from that game, headlined by Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Pedro Neto in attack.
Neither team could get into their rhythm early on, but the visitors came close, with Noni Madueke's header hitting the post from a corner. Late in the first period, Marcus Rashford also hit the woodwork as it ended 0-0 at the break.
It was more of the same in the second half, with Manchester United on the backfoot for extended periods of time. However, they took the lead in the 70th minute from the spot, with Fernandes converting for his first goal of the Premier League season. Hojlund was fouled in the box by Robert Sanchez and the Portugal international slotted home coolly to make it 1-0.
However, the lead lasted only four minutes as Chelsea came right back. Casemiro headed away a Chelsea corner, but the ball found Caicedo at the edge of the box, who unleashed a powerful first-time effort to level the scores.
Ruud van Nistelrooy's side held on in the dying moments of the game to hold the west Londoners to one point. The result sees them remain in the bottom half of the table, while Chelsea moved up to fourth. Here are the Red Devils player ratings:
Manchester United Player Ratings:
Andre Onana - 6/10
Despite Chelsea having the upper hand for a good portion of the fixture, they rarely troubled Onana. He made a couple of saves.
Diogo Dalot - 6/10
Dalot got a yellow card in the first half and had some difficult moments defending against Neto on the left flank.
Matthijs de Ligt - 6/10
The Dutchman had a solid game overall except for a nervy moment in the second half. He combined well with Martinez to deal with Nicolas Jackson.
Lisandro Martinez - 6.5/10
Another decent performance from Martinez, whose slightly risky tackle late on Palmer could have seen him sent off.
Noussair Mazraoui - 7/10
Manchester United's best defender on the night, Mazraoui completely shut down Noni Madeuke down the Blues' right. He was impressive going forward too, finishing with five dribbles and six passes into the final third.
Manuel Ugarte - 6/10
An up-and-down performance from the midfielder who had some impressive moments defensively but continues to struggle in possession.
Casemiro - 6.5/10
Casemiro was a strong presence in front of the back four. His defending during set pieces was crucial, but got a late yellow covering down the left.
Marcus Rashford - 5.5/10
A frustrating outing for Rashford, who largely struggled to get into the game. His only notable moment was hitting the post before being taken off for Amad Diallo.
Bruno Fernandes - 7/10
Once again proved to be Manchester United's heart and soul going forward as all the attacks went through him. He finally got on the scoresheet in the league but skied a good chance late on to take the lead.
Alejandro Garnacho - 4/10
A forgettable outing for the winger whose lack of edge in finishing continues to cause concern. He could not test Sanchez at all with two golden chances, and his indecision in the final third was worrisome as well.
Rasmus Hojlund - 5.5/10
A real lack of service saw Hojlund uninvolved for most of the game, with his only touch in the box winning Manchester United the penalty.
Substitutes
Amad Diallo - 6/10
Replaced Rashford for the last 15 minutes but could not make much of an impact.
Joshua Zirkzee and Victor Lindelof - N/A
The pair came on late and did not play enough minutes to merit a rating.
