What’s the story?

Antonio Conte has still not forgiven the Chelsea board for selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United. The Red Devils have been on another level this season thanks to the Serbian and have now set sights on another Chelsea player!

According to reports in The Times today, Jose Mourinho wants to take Cesc Fabregas to Old Trafford next summer. The Spaniard has 18 months left on his current contract but is yet to agree a new deal with the Premier League champions.

In case you didn’t know...

Chelsea board sanctioned the sale of Nemanja Matic after the midfielder made it clear that he wanted to work under Jose Mourinho again. United and Chelsea soon agreed on a fee and the Serbian made his switch to Old Trafford official.

All this happened without Antonio Conte having a say in it and the manager was furious with it. He has to work with a paper-thin squad this season and things are getting worse with injuries to the players this season.

The heart of the matter

Cesc Fabregas is 30-years-old and Chelsea have a policy of handing players his age just a one-year contract. The Spaniard, however, wants to sign a 2-year deal and thus the talks have stalled.

Mourinho wants to sign a Central Attacking Midfielder and has set sights on a few targets. Fabregas is the latest in the list but a move for the Chelsea man looks unlikely to materialize.

Author’s Take

Despite not having a good start to the season at Chelsea, Fabregas has it all to turn the tables. He cannot operate well in a 2-man midfield as he loves attacking and is always having an eye on the forwards and the defenders around them.

This makes it difficult for him to contribute properly while the opponents have the ball and it forces his partner to cover up for him every single time.
