Reports: Manchester United interested in signing Chelsea star

Manchester United v CSKA Moskva - UEFA Champions League
A smart move by Mourinho?

What's the story?

Chelsea have received enquiries from Premier League rivals Manchester United for midfielder Willian according to English media outlet Daily Mail. However, the report states that the London club are not willing to sell any of their players in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Willian is said to have grown frustrated with the lack of game time at Chelsea despite claiming to be happy at the club this past midweek.

In case you didn't know...

The 29-year-old joined Chelsea in 2013 for a fee of €35 million when current Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was at the club. Willian was a key player in the squad under the Portuguese manager but has been left on the bench for a majority of the time under Antonio Conte.

Willian was given his first start in eight games by Conte against Huddersfield on Tuesday and the former Shakhtar Donetsk player proved himself by scoring a goal and assisting two. He also claimed to be happy at the club after the match. The Brazilian had scored a crucial equaliser for the Blues against Liverpool last month.

The heart of the matter

Mourinho, who joined Manchester United after getting the boot from Chelsea, reportedly wants to bring Willian to Old Trafford. The 54-year-old manager is a big admirer of the Brazilian and is looking forward to reuniting with him at Manchester United to add more quality and depth to the wide areas.

However, Chelsea are reluctant to sell any of their players according to Daily Mail. The outlet claims that Conte is more interested in adding players to the squad than selling, with the Premier League title defenders being heavily linked with AS Monaco attacker Thomas Lemar and Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey.

Author's take

Even though Willian has publicly said that he is happy at Chelsea, the player will be looking for more playing time especially with the FIFA World Cup coming up next year. The Brazilian will be on the move if Conte is not able to assure him consistent time on the pitch and a reunion with Mourinho is a good idea.

However, a move to Manchester United in January does not look like a possibility at this point.
