Manchester United boss David Moyes’ failings in the transfer window have escalated further with deals for Real Madrid defender Fabio Coentrao and Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke both likely to fall through in January.
The Scot has overseen a dramatic dip in form that has left United languishing in 7th place in the Premier League and dumped out of the FA Cup by Swansea. Although he has voiced concerns that the calibre of players that he wants at United will not be available, Moyes cannot be seen to be unwilling to take action. Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign was likely to be followed by a period of transition but if United fail to qualify for the Champions League Moyes will be under real pressure.
Heavily criticised in the summer for failing to secure any of his high profile targets, Moyes and Ed Woodward have identified full back Fabio Coentrao as a high priority once more. Competition is needed on the flanks with confidence dwindling in another Fabio, one half of the Da Silva twins, and the ageing Patrice Evra, but Real Madrid have shut the door on any deal for the 25 year-old.
Carlo Ancelotti stunned United by declaring “No players are leaving and we’re not going to sign anyone. The window is closed for us.” The stance may well be a ploy to drive up the price for the Portuguese international so the ability of Moyes and Woodward will be tested as convincing their European rivals to part with a fringe player that has been restricted to just four appearances this term seems achievable.
Meanwhile, Madrid’s city neighbours and rivals, Atletico, who are high flying in second spot in La Liga are also prepared to play hard ball with The Red Devils. The Atlético sporting director José Luis Pérez Caminero confirmed, “Koke will be with us for many years. I am convinced. He is a player who has improved considerably. (He) has also made it into the Spain squad and that puts you in the spotlight and opens more eyes.”
United have the funds to prise the 21-year-old away from Spain but whether Moyes is willing to sanction a massive transfer fee or possesses the confidence to opt for a youngster when a ready made marquee signing may be the better option to add a spark of creativity to his midfield is a tough call. Any other transfer blunders or frantic deadline day dealings will not be well received.
Koke has created 37 chances this season compared to Tom Cleverley’s seven.
