What's the story?

Matteo Darmian becomes one of the players to seal a transfer on the deadline day after his move to Parma from Manchester United became official.

In case you missed it...

Matteo Darmian arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2015 from Torino. The Italian defender had a bright start to his Manchester United career, winning the club's best player award in his first month with the Red Devils.

However, a long-term injury to his full-back partner Luke Shaw prevented Darmian to build on a promising start to his United tenure.

Eventually, Matteo Darmian lost his place in the starting lineup, falling behind Antonio Valencia and Ashely Young in the pecking order. To accentuate the misery, Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka's respective arrivals in the previous two summer windows pushed Darmian into an exile from the first-team.

Although, former Torino man has played an important role in United's recent success in League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League triumphs.

In a bid to resurrect his career, Darmian sought a move back to his homeland, Italy. The 29-year-old's wish to leave United after playing under three different managers was granted as the Red Devils agreed on a permanent transfer with Serie A outfit Parma worth in the region of โ‚ฌ1.5m.

The heart of the matter

Confirming the transfer, Manchester released an official statement, saying:

Manchester United can confirm that defender Matteo Darmian has signed for Italian side Parma.

In four years with us, Matteo scored one goal - a sublime volley against Crystal Palace in 2016, in a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.
Everyone at Manchester United would like to thank Matteo for his service and wish him all the best for the future.

What's next?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will try to turn his side's fortune when they host Leicester City after the international break on September 14.
