Manchester United transfer rumour: Club wants Andre Silva to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the future

Andre Silva: Future Manchester United star?

Following Manchester United's summer transfer window spending, the club would have been expected to perform better than how they have fared so far in the season. Splashing money on Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Eric Bailly in addition to getting Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free should have made Jose Mourinho's title contenders right from the start.

However, after 11 match-weeks, Man United languish in the sixth spot in the Premier League table, eight points behind league leaders, Liverpool. With Wayne Rooney's form a major concern, Mourinho has had to play the 35-year-old Ibrahimovic up front more regularly than he would have hoped for.

According to a report in the Daily Record, the club seems to have joined in the race to sign young Portuguese striker, Andre Silva, who has been in red-hot form of late for club and country. In 10 Primeira Liga appearances for Porto this season, Silva has scored 7 goals and has 1 assist. He also notched up two goals in the UEFA Champions League.

Silva, who had represented Portugal at Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 levels, was called up to the senior squad in August. The 21-year-old has scored four goals in four World Cup qualifying matches, including a hat-trick against the Faroe Islands.

United, however, will have to ward off interest from other clubs like Barcelona, Manchester City and Real Madrid, who are all looking to sign up the youngster. Porto, who offered a new contract to Silva, will receive at least €60 million (current release clause) if the player makes his way to any of the aforementioned clubs.

Ibrahimovic's contract with the Red Devils runs until the end of the season, following which the club has an option to extend the contract for one more year. The club will be looking for a fitting replacement for the Swede, who has been United's top goalscorer this season.

Having missed out on signing Portuguese midfielder Renato Sanches from Benfica during the summer transfer window, Man United will not want to repeat the mistake of failing to come to an agreement on the transfer fee.

Mourinho will be looking to change the mood at Old Trafford which has been pretty glum so far with the club struggling in the league as well as in Europe. Manchester United will be facing an in-form Arsenal on November 19 and the United fans will be hoping that their club will get back in title contention with a win against the Gunners.
