Marco Reus rejected huge offers out of loyalty to Borussia Dortmund

Marco Reus extended his contract with Dortmund till 2019

Marco Reus’ decision to commit to Borussia Dortmund has been hailed by club chief-executive Hans-Joachim Watzke, who claims that the German had offers from “some of the biggest clubs in the world” worth “twice as much.”

Reus has been constantly linked with a move to Real Madrid, Chelsea and most top European clubs as the German’s previous contract had a €25 million release clause, set to come in effect in the end of the season. The new contract extends the attacker’s contract till 2019 and gets rid of the release clause.

Even the most hardened Westfalenstadion faithful would be surprised at Reus’ decision to sign an extension for the team struggling in the Bundesliga. Dortmund is languishing in the 16th place of the Bundesliga table with 19 points from 20 games and is set for a tough relegation battle.

The Dortmund CEO echoed these sentiments saying, "Reus' renewal is a crazy story. It really is remarkable. He could have earned twice as much elsewhere," Watzke told Bild.

"On one hand you have some of the biggest clubs in the world chasing you and then there's the relegation battle with Dortmund - and no Champions League football next season.

"But he is committed to Dortmund. It would have been very difficult for Marco to leave the city and club. That was decisive in the end. He really is a special guy.”
