Mats Hummels discusses future; talks about moving abroad amid Manchester United interest

Mats Hummels discussed his future and spoke about moving abroad amid Manchester United interest while on international break.

Mats Hummels discussed his future at Dortmund and moving abroad

Having stated previously that he would be staying at Borussia Dortmund regardless of the outcome of their season, German international Mats Hummels has revealed that he would, in fact, be open to a move abroad.

Borussia Dortmund’s struggles this season led many to believe that there would be a mass exodus from the Westfalenstadion. But an improvement in results as well as other stars like Marco Reus re-signing has alleviated fears.

Dortmund may still miss out on Champions League football though, and to compound their problems, Hummels has reneged on previous comments talking about his commitment to the club, and has now spoken about the appeal of playing abroad.

Speaking to Kicker whilst on international duty, Hummels said, “Often I think that, one day, I want to play abroad, but there are also days when I say I don’t need that. I have had many conversations with the leaders of Dortmund, where I know I am a big part of the team. But I am yet to make a decision about my future.”

But when asked about the interest of Manchester United, for whom he has been a long-term target, the 26-year-old replied, “I think the experience abroad is good for the development of a player. I have made no decision. I am not the sort of guy who talks about staying at the club when they’ve already decided to leave.”

“Everyone knows how much I like to play for Dortmund but I also want to play with a powerful team and a powerful approach. Whether we are in the Champions League, the Europa League or have no European football at all, it will play no part in my decision-making.”

Hummels’ change of mind bodes well for United as they look to continue rebuilding this summer. A new defence will be high on manager Louis Van Gaal’s transfer wishlist and if they can achieve a top 4 finish and return to the Champions League, their chances of signing Hummels will be boosted significantly.
