German midfielder Mesut Ozil is gearing up for the Champions League play-off draw for the upcoming season. He tweeted his excitement ahead of the draw and asked the fans which opponent they would like to face this time. By the looks of it, Arsenal’s potential opponents are Lille OSC, Standard Liege, Athletic Bilbao, FC Copenhagen or Besitkas.
Arsenal are forced to play this play-off match to make it to the group stages of the Champions League since they finished 4th in the league last season. Ozil alongside his German compatriots Lukas Podolski and Per Mertesacker will miss the start of the season since they all had a role to play in Germany’s successful World Cup campaign.
Wenger said: “I have a decision to make, do I bring them early and play them straight away and lose them in October or November or do I give them the needed rest to recover and get the hunger back? So I have chosen the second solution knowing that it is a bit risky because on top of that we have the qualifier for the Champions League group stage and they might not be ready for that.”
But before they play their first Premier League game, they will kickstart their season with the annual community shield game against reigning league Champions Manchester City on the 10th of August.
