20 September 2007, the Special One had recently broken a record for the most unbeaten games at home – 64. Despite a poor start to the 07/08 season , he had won everything apart from the CL in just two years at the club. Despite all his work, he was sacked by Abramovich, with the press citing personal differences between Abramovich and Mourinho as the propable cause. Since that day, Abramovich has stopped at nothing to find the next ‘Special One’, but in vain.

Now that his return looks increasingly likely, amid reports of a ‘handshake agreement’ to come to Chelsea at the end of the season, it is imperative that this signing is one for the future and not just for the next few years. With a squad like Chelsea’s, young and full of potential, a manager merry-go-round could be exactly what they need to become a team of flops. Stability now could see this team with the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne, David Luiz, Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku become one of the best teams in the world.

That needs to start with the way the club is run. It is well documented that one of Mourinho’s concerns before returning is the club structure. When was the last time the manager was credited with a transfer? RDM admitted he had no idea of the Marin move. Mourinho, it appears, would like full control over team affairs – including transfers and contracts.

Piet de Visser and Micheal Emenalo. Synonymous with Abramovich’s bad decisions, they act as his advisors. And somehow they haven’t been fired yet. I am in no position to judge them or their work, parts of which I’m sure have been outstanding, but the fact is they are costing Chelsea with their bad decisions. I just hope getting a manger other than Mourinho in the summer won’t be one of those bad decisions.

I mentioned Chelsea’s record 64 unbeaten home run. To be champions, Chelsea need to turn Stamford Bridge into the fortress it once was, not the hostile and quite atmosphere it unfortunately has so often been this season. Mourinho is the right man for the job, just please get him back.
