Virgil van Dijk has dismissed reports that he is close to signing a new deal at Liverpool, saying there was no new update on the same. The Dutchman is in the final seven months of his contract with the Reds, and talks are ongoing between the two parties.

Speaking to ViaPlay, Van Dijk claimed that no agreement was in place for a new deal and there were issues that needed to be sorted. He added that he was currently focusing on the in-field action and aims to make this season a successful one for the Reds. He said:

"To be honest, no.. there is no update, there is no news. So I have nothing to share to you. If you read reports about agreements done, or no agreements, all of that is not true. Everything has to fit together. Of course there are conversations going on between the club and my agent, but right now I have nothing to share. I am focused on playing football, I want to end the season succesfully, and let's see what next year brings."

Van Dijk will be free to sign a pre-contract with any other club from January 2025. Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also in the same situation.

Virgil van Dijk heaped praise on Liverpool duo

Virgil van Dijk heaped praise on Liverpool manager Arne Slot and teammate Ryan Gravenberch while in conversation with ViaPlay. He said Slot had shown why he was chosen to replace Jurgen Klopp and added that the Dutch manager had settled in well at Anfield. He said:

"Replacing Jurgen Klöpp is a very difficult task, but Arne Slot is doing an excellent job. The way he presents himself to the outside world, to the players, his interviews, his way of explaining tactics."

Talking about the former Ajax and Bayern Munich midfielder, Van Dijk added:

"Ryan Gravenberch is in the form of his life, he is playing with 100% confidence and is developing himself very good defensively. Of course I am constantly shouting to him during the games but I think he likes it. It's going great! He needs to remain calm, stay fit, and keep going."

Liverpool are on top of the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League tables this season. They take on Manchester City in their next league match on Sunday, December 1, and will be looking to extend their lead at the top to 11 points.
