FC Bayern München v Arsenal FC: Quarter-final Second Leg - UEFA Champions League 2023/24

It was a night to forget for Arsenal as they fell to a 1-0 defeat against Bayern Munich to seal their exit from the Champions League in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, April 17.

The two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium. A win would have meant a first appearance in the semis of the competition for the Gunners since the 2009-10 edition of the tournament.

A cagey first half saw neither side create many chances to go ahead as it ended goalless.

However, Bayern finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. A quick counter-attack saw Leroy Sane chip the ball to Raphael Guerreiro, who found Joshua Kimmich. The German full-back headed home from close range to make it 1-0.

Arsenal were relentless in their pursuit of an equaliser but were undone by a resilient and organized defensive performance by the hosts, who broke a streak of three consecutive exits in the last eight. They will face Real Madrid in the semi-finals.

Here are the player ratings:

Arsenal Player Ratings

David Raya - 6/10

He did not have much to do apart from a smart stop in the first half to deny Jamal Musiala. He finished with three saves on the night and was decent with his distribution as well (three long balls completed).

Ben White - 6/10

A solid performance defensively from the right-back but he did not contribute much going forward

William Saliba - 6.5/10

After a first leg that saw the Frenchman face some trouble going up against Harry Kane, he put up a much improved showing, limiting the Englishman effectively.

Gabriel - 6/10

A decent outing in central defense alongside his partner Saliba.

Takehiro Tomiyasu - 6/10

Similar to the other full-back, Tomiyasu defended well against Leroy Sane but offered very little going forward even when the Gunners were chasing the game.

Jorginho - 5.5/10

Playing as the deepest midfielder, the Italian had some struggles initially but grew into the game and was solid defensively.

Declan Rice - 5/10

A night to forget for Arsenal's record signing, who failed to have his usual say both on and off the ball. He could not really get going throughout the fixture, finishing with one shot, one chance created, and no tackles or interceptions in the game.

Martin Odegaard - 6/10

He almost got an assist in the first half when he set up Martinelli, but the Brazilian could not finish. Outside that he was largely quiet and could not unlock the Bayern defence.

Bukayo Saka - 5/10

Arsenal's star attacker seemed to have a positive matchup with Tuchel choosing to deploy Noussair Mazraoui out of position at left-back. However, he struggled to be the attacking threat he usually is, finishing with zero shots, zero chances created, and just one pass into the final third.

Kai Havertz - 5.5/10

He was deployed up top initially and eventually moved back into midfield with the introduction of Gabriel Jesus. However, he was largely quiet for most of the affair.

Gabriel Martinelli - 6/10

The Brazilian forward had a good opportunity to open the scoring but could only shoot straight at Manuel Neuer in the first half. That proved to be Arsenal's best chance of the game as Martinelli and the others failed to break the Bavarians' defensive structure further on.

Substitutes

Gabriel Jesus - 5.5/10

Coming on the 68th minute to provide a different attacking setup, Jesus was barely influential. He strayed offside for his one good chance in his cameo.

Leandro Trossard - 6/10

Similar to Jesus, Trossard also could not make a difference coming off the bench and playing on the left flank.

Eddie Nketiah - N/A

Nketiah came on too late and did not play enough minutes to merit a rating.
