Football pundit Roy Keane slammed England right-back Kyle Walker after the Three Lions' 3-1 loss to Senegal in a friendly fixture on Tuesday, June 10. He felt the Manchester City defender was lazy in tracking back, leading to the visiting side's equalizer at the City Ground.
England went 1-0 up thanks to Harry Kane and were heading towards halftime with the lead intact. But Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson chased a longball and made an excellent effort to put the ball into the danger zone for Senegal. Walker was caught out of position and Ismaila Sarr managed to equalize.
Keane was furious with the effort from the England defender and said on ITV (via METRO):
"Do you know what, if this was a young right-back starting out in the game, you’re thinking inexperience? But do you know what I’m thinking? People maybe say a lack of concentration, I think he’s being lazy, I think he’s being lazy here. He’s a vastly experienced player and he just can’t be bothered getting back in.
"As you know, you tell defenders all the time, ‘get back in’. And if it comes in you’re ready for it, he’s just on his heels and he can’t be bothered getting back. I know he’s had a difficult few months, but for a vastly experienced player you can’t be making mistakes like that."
Ian Wright was also not happy with the effort from the England defender and added:
"The only thing with it is, even with Jackson’s cross, Jackson’s not looking for anyone, he’s putting it somewhere, so if Kyle gets in he probably clears that."
England went on to lose the match 3-1, with Habib Diara and Cheikh Sabaly scoring in the second half for Senegal.
England froze but nothing to panic, claims Thomas Tuchel
England boss Thomas Tuchel admitted that his side weren't 'active enough' in the match against Senegal but he was not worried. He reminded the fans that the World Cup was next year and they had enough time to work on their shortcomings.
He said (via ESPN):
"I'm not sure if we did not deserve a little bit more result-wise. It felt a bit frozen, not active enough for a long time over the match. [But] we lost a test match so there is no need to panic. We have [played] three qualification games, we have nine points and not conceded. We will be competitive in September, and we will go for two more victories -- 100% we will. We don't go next week to the World Cup, we go in one year."
England fans booed Tuchel and the players after the loss on Tuesday.
