Football pundit Paul Merson believes Marcus Rashford has no space in head coach Ruben Amorim's starting XI at Manchester United. Merson isn't sure where the Englishman would fit in the lineup going forward after playing as the No. 9 in Amorim's first game in charge of the side.
On Sky Sports, Merson talked about Rashford's performance as the lone centre-forward in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday, November 24. He said that Rashford cannot hold up the ball, making him non-effective in the Portuguese's system. He explained:
“I’m a great believer that the cream always rises to the top. We talk about talent, we talk about great players, but great players work hard and he’s worked hard to get where he is. He’s never had this situation where he’s not first choice anymore. He needs to get a bit consistent.
"I don’t like him as a centre-forward. I don’t think he is a centre-forward. Having his back to play isn’t Marcus Rashford. Holding the ball up, he needs to be running with the ball at goal, not having his back to goal. I don’t know where they will find space for him in this team, that’s my big worry.”
Though Marcu Rashford scored in the opening minutes of the match against Ipswich, he couldn't quite add to it.
Gabby Agbonlahor claims Ruben Amorim will sell Manchester United star
Gabby Agbonlahor, on talkSPORT earlier this month, claimed Ruben Amorim would not think twice before selling Marcus Rashford. The pundit believes the Manchester United star has no place in the starting XI as the system does not suit him.
He said:
“[Arorim’s] come into United to succeed, he’s not come in to just pick players who have been there for a while. If you’re not at it, some of these players have got six months to the summer window. If you’re not at it you’re gone… There’s probably not space for both Garnacho and Rashford. Looking at a 3-4-3 you’d probably say Garnacho, [Rasmus] Højlund, and maybe an Amad [Diallo] that you’d pick.”
Manchester United take on Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on Thursday, November 28, before taking on Everton in the Premier League on Sunday. They then have a tough league clash at Arsenal next week followed by Nottingham Forest at home.
