Liverpool star Diogo Jota was celebrating his wedding on social media, just hours before he passed away. The Portuguese got married last month to his long-term partner Rute Cardoso with whom he has three kids.
Jota and Cardoso have been together since 2012 and got engaged in July 2022. The couple got married on June 22nd, just days after the Liverpool star won the UEFA Nations League with Portugal.
The Liverpool star took to Instagram to share a glimpse of his special day. The reel had the couple getting ready for their ceremony, and ended with them dancing alongside their loved ones in the night, with the voiceover:
"Dear Rute, Dear Diogo, today is the day that will mark your lives for the rest of your days. This is the only day that you have been able to get together, at the same time, in the same place [with] your family, your friends, to celebrate what truly matters, which is love."
Along with Diogo Jota, his brother Andre Silva also passed away in the accident. The 26-year-old was also a footballer and played for FC Penafiel in the Portuguese second division.
Portugal FA have confirmed the passing away of Liverpool star Diogo Jota
Portugal FA have confirmed the devastating news that Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva have passed away. Their statement confirmed that the duo were involved in a car accident in Spain and passed away in the early morning of Thursday, July 3.
"The Portuguese Football Federation and all of Portuguese football are completely devastated by the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, this morning, in Spain. Much more than an outstanding player, with nearly 50 caps for the National A Team, Diogo Jota was an extraordinary person, respected by all colleagues and opponents, someone with a contagious joy and a reference in his own community."
They have requested that UEFA hold a minute's silence for the Liverpool and Penafiel stars ahead of Portugal's clash with Spain at the UEFA Women's EURO.
"The Portuguese Football Federation expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Diogo and André Silva, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel, the clubs where the players respectively played. The Portuguese Football Federation has already requested UEFA to hold a minute of silence, this Thursday, before our National Team's match against Spain in the Women's European Championship. We have lost two champions. The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese Football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy daily."
Liverpool have made a short statement confirming the news, and added that they would not be making any further comments at this time.
