Shay Given believes it will be amazing to see Pep Guardiola's side go up against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami at the FIFA Club World Cup later this month. He believes that it will be tough for Manchester City to win the tournament as PSG and Real Madrid are also participating.
Speaking to DAZN, Given stated that it will be a good competition in the United States as the clubs will be looking to create history as the first FIFA Club World Cup champions with the new format. He said (via GOAL):
βIt would be amazing. Messi, for me, one of the best players to ever grace the planet. From a City point of view, with the profile of the club, it just feels like if they can get their hands on itβ¦ Itβs a big ask with so many big clubs - Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final were phenomenal, the likes of them and Real Madrid will have the same ambition to get their hands on this trophy. As an ex-City player I would love to see them win it, but itβs not going to be easy. Itβs going to be tough.β
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Manchester City are not in the same group, and thus, both sides will have to make it to the knockout stage to face each other. The MLS side will face Al Ahly, Palmeiras, and FC Porto in their group games, while Pep Guardiola's side will take on Juventus, Al Ain, and Wydad AC.
Pep Guardiola will be keen on beating everyone, including Lionel Messi's side, claims Shay Given
Shay Given has claimed that the Club World Cup is a big tournament in terms of prize money, and every side will be looking to secure the win. He added that becoming world champions will also give them bragging rights, especially Lionel Messi's former boss Pep Guardiola. Given said (via GOAL):
βItβs a big tournament. Some of the biggest clubs in the world will be there. I think Guardiola will see this as an opportunity to make a bit of history as a club - the first one, get that gold badge on their chest for the next four years. They will be world champions, and thatβs a big statement."
βAnything that Pep Guardiola is involved with, he wants to win. Heβll be hurting on the back of not winning anything. They would have thought the FA Cup final would soften that blow a little bit, but Crystal Palace had other ideas. They look like they are strengthening in the window, a couple of players may be coming in before the Club World Cup, so Iβm sure that he wants to get his hands on this trophy.β
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami were added to the tournament after winning the MLS Supporters' Shield in 2024. Manchester City qualified after winning the UEFA Champions League in 2023.
