Jamie Carragher names 2 Newcastle stars as he picks Premier League team of the season

The Magpies have been the surprise of the season
The Magpies have been the surprise of the season

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher has named his best XI of the 2022-23 Premier League season, including two Newcastle United players.

Now a commentator and pundit, Carragher was on the latest episode of Monday Night Football on Sky Sports where he was asked to name his dream lineup from the 2022-23 season in the English top-flight.

Many of the players the 45-year-old picked were big names who enjoyed a terrific season such as Erling Haaland, Harry Kane, Mohamed Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, Alisson, Martin Odegaard, Rodri, Ruben Dias, and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

However, he also named two Newcastle stars, Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman, in his team, which might have been a surprise for many.

The Magpies had an impressive campaign under Eddie Howe and qualified for UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years. With 70 points from 37 games, Newcastle are currently third in the Premier League standings and guaranteed to finish inside the top four.

Their campaign was built on the back of a stoic defense that has conceded only 32 goals so far, the best record in the division after only champions Manchester City (31).

Both Trippier and Botman have played a big role in it. Trippier returned to Premier League after joining Newcastle from Atletico Madrid in January last year. Following a slow start, he hit peak form this season.

A full-back by trade, he's scored one goal and made seven assists for the Magpies to add a new dimension to Newcastle's attack, but has looked solid defensively too.

Botman, on the other hand, was signed on a €37 million transfer from Lille last summer and took no time to establish himself in the squad. The Dutchman has made 34 appearances in the league and averages over three clearances and one tackle each game.

Carragher heaps praise on Premier League's two best strikers

Going back to Jamie Carragher's best XI of the season, the former Liverpool ace had some big words for Premier League's two best goalscorers this season, Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.

Haaland leads the way for the Golden Boot with 36 goals, a record in the competition, while Kane is the next best with 28 goals.

Carragher called the Norwegian a "freak" but was more impressed with Kane's exploits as it came with an erratic Tottenham Hotspur side that's currently languishing in eighth position.

He said (via Sky Sports):

"Haaland is a freak but Harry Kane, what he has done this season, playing in one of the worst teams he has played in, to get that number of goals, I think is out of this world."
