Italian giants Juventus have released a statement after they were ordered by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to pay Cristiano Ronaldo his unpaid wages. The ruling came as a result of a dispute arising from pay reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic,
The legendary forward, who now plays for Al-Nassr, stated that he was owed €19.5 million ($20.81 million) by the Turin giants in unpaid wages. The Court ruling will see Juventus pay Cristiano Ronaldo around half that amount, with a €9.8 million settlement reached.
The Italian giants quickly moved to make a statement after the ruling, stating:
"The arbitration tribunal ruled Juve had to pay half of the sum requested by the 39-year-old Portugal striker. They partially granted the request made by [Ronaldo]… ascertaining Juventus’ pre-contractual liability resulting from the failure of negotiations and ordered the defendant to pay an amount of approximately Euro 9.8 million."
Juventus have also hinted at their desire to contest the ruling in their statement, saying:
“The Company, also with the support of its legal counsel, is reviewing the decision made by the arbitration board, reserving all assessments and initiatives to preserve its rights.”
Cristiano Ronaldo left Juventus in 2021 after four years at the club that saw a return of 101 goals and 22 assists in 134 appearances. The Portuguese icon returned to Manchester United for a season and a half before he moved to his current side Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr boss Luis Castro forced to take a medical break
Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr will be without the Portugues duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and manager Luis Castro for their next game against Al-Fayha. The Real Madrid icon will be out of contention following his sending-off against Al Hilal in his last match for the side.
The manager will also be forced to miss the game following a minor medical procedure that will see him sidelined. News of his absence was revealed by the club in a statement that read (via GOAL):
“Coach of the first team Mr. Luis Castro was advised by the doctor to refrain from physical activity for a few days following a minor medical procedure. Mr. Vitor Severino, the first assistant coach, will be in charge of the team until Mr. Castro comes back. Get well soon Mister.”
Al-Nassr will hope they have what it takes to bounce back from their defeat in the last game without Cristiano Ronaldo, their talisman. The Portuguese star has 42 goals in 42 appearances across competitions for Al-Nassr this season.
