Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has identified the Liverpool quartet of Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz to watch out for. The Cityzens travel to Anfield on Sunday (December 1) to take on the Premier League leaders.
Guardiola's side couldn't have been in worse form ahead of the 1-2 clash, navigating a six-game winless streak across competitions, losing the first five, including three in the league. In stark contrast, the Reds are riding a crest of impressive form.
Arne Slot's side have lost just once in 19 games across competitions, winning 17, including the last six. The latest of those victories was a 2-0 home win over reigning UEFA Champions League holders Real Madrid in midweek. City, meanwhile, snapped their five-game losing streak across competitions in midweek but squandered a three-goal lead in a 3-3 home draw with Feyenoord.
Ahead of the Anfield clash this weekend, the Manchester City boss said about the aforementioned Reds quartet (as per TBR):
“Every corner or free-kick for you is a transition (opportunity) for them. How quick… the weapons they have up front, always since I’ve been here with (Roberto) Firmino, (Sadio) Mane, Salah.
“Now, with the other players. With Jota, with Nunes, with Luis Diaz, with Salah. 0-0 is a good result, even in the past when we were fighting the biggest battles since I have been here fighting Liverpool.”
Among the quartet, Salah has been in solid form this season, registering 12 goals and 10 assists in 19 games across competitions.
Liverpool's Cody Gakpo previews Manchester City clash
Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo foresees a tough clash with Manchester City but recognises the opportunity to open daylight in the title race against the faltering champions.
Enduring one of their worst runs in decades, the Cityzens - winless in six games across competitions - are looking to claw back an eight-point deficit to the Premier League leaders.
“It is a massive opportunity, I think, against a very good team,” Gakpo told the Reds' website (as per TBR) “One of the best teams in Europe actually (who have been) dominating a lot of games in recent years.
“But this is a massive chance for us to show them what we are made of and that’s what we are planning to do. So, hopefully, it’s going to be a good game from us again, and we end up with a win.”
He concluded:
“Obviously, we are in a good position, you cannot deny that. But I think it’s still early in the season, so we are not really looking at the table yet. Obviously, we are aware of the situation, but we have to keep winning the games to stay on top and also just to win the games.”
Manchester City are looking to avoid becoming the first holders in the Premier League era to lose four straight games.
