Manchester United legend Gary Neville teased Liverpool by saying Alexis Mac Allister is the best midfielder outside of the Premier League top six.

Neville held a Q&A on X (formerly Twitter) and was asked various questions from fans. One wanted to know who the former Red Devils captain most admired outside of the top six.

The Sky Sports pundit gave a witty response when naming Mac Allister. He said:

"MacAllister at Liverpool (wink)."

Fans were quick to remind the Manchester United hero that the Merseysiders currently sit fourth in the league. Jurgen Klopp's men are four places above Neville's former club.

Mac Allister, 24, arrived at Anfield from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer for £35 million. The Argentine midfielder has bedded in well to Klopp's midfield, providing one assist in 11 games across competitions.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner was actually on United's radar before deciding to go to Liverpool. The Times reports that Mac Allister wanted to play under Klopp on Merseyside, thus snubbing the Red Devils.

This was despite Klopp's side failing to qualify for UEFA Champions League football this season. He was in superb form for Brighton last season, managing 12 goals and three assists in 40 games across competitions.

Liverpool icon Michael Owen explains his controversial move to Manchester United

Michael Owen is the only player in Liverpool's history to win the illustrious Ballon d'Or award. The English legend was one of the Merseysiders' greats during his seven years at Anfield (1997-2004). He bagged 158 goals and 50 assists in 297 games, winning five major trophies.

However, Owen left his boyhood club for Real Madrid, a move that never really panned out. He wanted to return to English football but couldn't seal a reunion with the Anfield outfit.

Owen instead headed to Newcastle United in 2005 before making a shock move to Manchester United four years later. The Englishman has admitted he had to put the two rivals' hatred for one another to one side when heading to Old Trafford (via Manchester Evening News):

"I didn't go from Liverpool to Manchester United because that would have been virtually impossible, but everyone knows I grew up playing for Liverpool in the academy and when I left to go to Madrid and then came back home, I wanted to go to Liverpool. Once I went to Newcastle... that almost broke my heart in a way because I wasn't going back to what I perceive to be my club."

Owen claimed Brendan Rodgers didn't want him at Anfield and thus his best choice was to join Manchester United:

"Brendan Rodgers said he didn't need me at the time. You have just got to go to whoever is the best available. Once I got over that [feeling of] is everyone going to hate me and the pain of have I ruined everything etc. etc, it was a no-brainer [to join United]. I knew everyone, I played at England with them all, I knew Sir Alex and all the rest of it."

The English hero spent two years with the Red Devils, bagging 17 goals and three assists in 52 games across competitions. He won the Premier League in 2011 before retiring from professional football in 2013.
