Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has revealed that the Reds have an option to extend his contract by a season and are likely to activate it. He admitted that it was a key season in his career as he wanted to do his best to get a place in the FIFA World Cup next year.
Speaking to the media, Alisson confirmed that he had held talks with former Brazilian players from the Premier League regarding a return to the Brazilian Serie A. However, he has no plans to switch clubs immediately as he wants to continue playing at the top level and said (via METRO and Fabrizio Romano):
"I have one year of contract left and one more year on a club option. They will probably exercise this option. I think about what I have in hand, to do a great job. It's a decisive moment in my career, when a World Cup is coming. I want to be very focused, I don’t want anything external to get in the way of that. I talk to athletes who have made this move to return, some have had good experiences, others not. Each one will have their own experience, but I want to return, especially to Inter. I don’t know when it will happen, but I still want to do it at a high level. That’s what I have planned."
Liverpool will also have Giorgi Mamardashvili returning from Valencia. The Reds had agreed a deal for him last year, but the goalkeeper stayed with the Spanish side for another season. They are also reportedly bringing in Armin Pesci from Puskas Akademia this month.
Liverpool coach explains plans with goalkeepers
Liverpool goalkeeping coach Claudio Taffarel spoke to ESPN Brasil in April and stated that Liverpool had signed Giorgi Mamardashvili keeping the future in mind. They still believe in Alisson but were preparing themselves for the Brazilian's eventual exit. He said (via This Is Anfield):
“The club made that decision [to sign Mamardashvili], I think a year ago, a year and a bit ago. This purchase of this young player, maybe a little for the future. But Alisson is a guy who is at a very high level. And even at his age, with his experience, with his desire, it will be very difficult for someone to come here and replace him, right?”
Alisson was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia last summer, but decided to stay at Anfield. He played a key role in their Premier League title win in Arne Slot's first season at the club.
