Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has defended the club's goalkeeper, Andre Onana, after his poor showing in the club's loss to Nottingham Forest. The Cameroonian goalkeeper made an error that led to Forest's second goal in United's 3-2 home defeat on Saturday, December 7.

Onana keeper misjudged a shot by Morgan Gibbs-White that bounced in front of him to give Forest a 2-1 lead at Old Trafford in the 47th minute.

Onana joined the Red Devils in 2023 for a reported €50.2 million fee from Inter Milan to replace club legend David de Gea, who was allowed to leave as a free agent. He has conceded 109 goals and kept 20 clean sheets in 72 games for United.

Speaking to the press after the match, Amorim defended the keeper to the media, saying (via BeanymanSports):

"Onana has saved us a lot of times. We have to find a way when [a mistake] happens. We have to turn it around to help our goalkeeper. The same way he saves us at Ipswich."

Manchester United will hope Andre Onana can rediscover his confidence before his side's next league game, a derby against reigning English champions Manchester City. He has conceded 26 goals and kept seven clean sheets in 21 games this season.

"I'd like to give him [Andre Onana] some credit" - Former Manchester United star backs keeper after blunder against Nottingham Forest

Former Manchester United defender Phil Jones has backed the club's goalkeeper, Andre Onana, after his recent blunder against Nottingham Forest.

Jones joined the club for a reported €19.3 million fee from Blackburn Rovers and made 229 appearances before his departure in 2023. After Onana's mistake, Jones said on SkySports (via The United Stand):

"I'd like to give him [Andre Onana] some credit and say the ball deviated a little bit but it's hardly a knuckleball. He should be saving it."

Manchester United have been poor this season and currently sit in 13th place on the Premier League table after 15 games. The Red Devils will hope the former Inter Milan keeper can rediscover the form that saw him help the team to the FA Cup last season.
