What’s the story?

Barcelona are yet to recover from the shock of Paris Saint-Germain activating Neymar's release clause but the French side have set sights on their next target. Reports in talkSPORT claim that PSG are now eyeing a move for Javier Mascherano.

This comes just a day after the Argentine hinted that his time at Camp Nou is coming to an end. When asked if it this was his last season at Barcleona, “Yes, it could be,” he said. “You have to know when to bring things to an end. There's no need to contaminate relationships.” (Quotes via SPORT)

In case you didn’t know...

PSG brought the world to a standstill in the summer when they activated Neymar's €222 million release clause. The Ligue 1 side broke the world record and also found the best possible loophole in the Financial Fair Play rules to complete the signing.

The heart of the matter

Mascherano's time at Camp Nou is coming to an end and he's now a target for PSG. The French side are looking to sign him on a free transfer and are willing to offer him more wages than Barcelona.

Ernesto Valverde prefers playing Pique and Umtiti in the heart of the defence and the Argentine finds it hard to get some match time. He is not willing to remain on the bench and is looking for a move away as well.

Apart from PSG, Mascherano has also been linked with a move back to Liverpool and also said to be a target for a few MLS clubs. Chinese Super League sides are also keen on signing him but he's not looking to leave Europe for the time being.

Author’s Take

It wouldn't be a surprise if PSG actually end up signing Mascherano on a free transfer next summer. The Argentine might be 33-years-old but he has a lot to offer still and can be a very good back-up.

But the question remains if Mascherano will leave one bench for another. He wants to play more and that's obviously not going to happen at PSG
