Incredible Manchester City

Manchester United's shock 1-0 home defeat to relegation-threatened West Bromwich Albion handed Pep Guardiola's side the Premier League championship with five games to spare. After an emphatic 3-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley on Saturday, the Citizens needed only one win to be crowned the champions of England.

City have been far superior to everyone in the Premier League after Guardiola's squad embraced his fearless tactics and attacking dominance to blow away the opposition. Their success this season has seen them crowned champions of England for a third time in seven years and the fifth time in their history, having won the Football League in 1937 and 1968.

City have dominated the domestic season, losing just twice thus far and have won 28 of their 33 matches, with a record-breaking run of 18 successive victories between August and December. They have defeated every single team this season - only the third time that a Premier League team have done this in a single campaign. They have been so rampant in front of goal that they scored spectacular 93 goals, highest in the league.

The genius of Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has become one of the best football managers in the world after his successful stints at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Guardiola’s shrewd signings, with the support of club hierarchy, ensured that players play at the highest level with consistency. After his first trophy-less season in his career, the Spaniard managed to instil his philosophy of attacking and possession-based football successfully, this season. Guardiola’s guidance and tactical acumen have got a far-reaching effect on his team. The biggest change came in their winning mentality and self-belief.

City’s drastic improvements

The Citizens signed a goalkeeper, Ederson, who believed in the club’s project and lived up to expectations, replacing the out of form Claudio Bravo. In the last few seasons, the club’s weakest link was the defence, which was made stronger with the signings of Kyle Walker, Danilo, Benjamin Mendy, and Aymeric Laporte. The Catalan built the team around the creative trio of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Bernardo Silva, and the front line of Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sané.

City’s current players like Raheem Sterling, Fernandinho, John Stones, and Fabian Delph have improved vastly under the astute management of Guardiola. In factm Sterling and Sané have become one of the most devastating attackers in the Premier League under the guidance of Guardiola.

City's incredible achievement is down to a teamwork; this team is not dependant on the individual brilliance of a few players. This is evident from statistics at each position. Sergio Agüero has 21 goals and 6 assists, Sterling has 17 goals and 8 assists. Even after missing many matches owing to injuries, Jesus' figures are still impressive with 10 goals and 3 assists. Sané, David Silva and De Bruyne have 24 goals and 38 assists in between them in the League.

The Etihad Stadium outfit has the best defence in the league, having conceded only 25 goals until now owing to the stellar performances of Ederson and defenders.

Pep Guardiola's side need just nine points from their final five League games to set a new record for most Premier League points, while another 11 goals would see them set a new Premier League goal-scoring record. It is the second trophy of this season, they won the first trophy of the Guardiola era, when they lifted the Carabao Cup by beating Arsenal in February.

Ambitions and expectations

Manchester City have plans to become one of the best clubs in Europe. The process was started with the signing of Pep Guardiola and they spent heavily in the transfer market in acquiring new players. Even if their performances have been splendid in England, the same cannot be said about their performance in Europe.

In the Champions League, they were humiliated by a reinvigorated Liverpool in the quarter-finals. They have proved that they are the best team in England now, and hopes are pinned on them to become one of the best teams in Europe as well.

The Spaniard will make sure that his side will remain focused and try to end their Champions League drought more than ever.
