Premier League 2017/18: Amazing Statistics from this season

Manchester City v Huddersfield Town - Premier League
The new Premier League champions - Manchester City

With this season's Premier League officially over, we take a look back at some of the amazing statistics from the season. Various records were broken (individually and by clubs), new milestones set, while some just wish some records hadn't been set...this PL was no less than a roller coaster ride.

Without further much ado, let us take a look at the stats, courtesy of OptaJoe.

There's a first time for everything

Yes, this actually happened. Huddersfield finished gameweek 1 with 2nd on the table

1) This was the first time that both the Manchester clubs had defeated all 19 PL clubs they faced in a single season.

2) Chelsea became the first reigning champions since 1981 to lose on the opening day of the season (previous being Aston Villa). They also became the first reigning champions to concede 3 goals in their first league game. The downfall started right from the beginning.

3) Despite losing their first 7 games this season, without scoring a single goal in the process, Crystal Palace managed to avoid relegation. The last team to do so was Liverpool in the 1899/1900 season. You don't see that very often.

4) Arsenal may have had a bad season, but they became the first team to score 100 goals against a single opponent - Everton. The Gunners would hope that they play against Everton every week.

5) Pep and his side may have broken many records, but this was the first time that he lost thrice to a single opponent in a single season - Liverpool (once in the Premier League and twice in the Champions League). Pep would be looking to get his revenge next season.

6) For the first time since 1894/95, teams that finished out of the top 6 had conceded more goals than they had scored. Who cares about defence anyway...right?

7) For the first time since 1993/94, the PL saw 2 players score 30+ goals in a single season (Mohamed Salah and Harry Kane). Can we see more players next season?

8) United became the first team to win all the games in which they scored first (21 games) The previous club to do so was Portsmouth (14 games) in the 2007/08 season.

Manchester City and their record-breaking season

Manchester City v Huddersfield Town - Premier League
A season to remember for City and their fans

9) For the first time in the Premier League, a club won 32-games in a single season, beating Chelsea's 30 games record.

10) City finished this season with 100 points - the most by an English team in a single season, again beating Chelsea's 95-points record. And in doing so, Pep also finished a single season with 100 points for the first time. His previous best was 99 points with Barcelona.

11) Clubs play a total of 3,420 minutes (excluding extra time) in a season, and City trailed in just 153 minutes! That is some defence.

12) City couldn't go the season unbeaten, but they managed to win 18 consecutive top-flight wins between August and December. And in doing so, they broke Arsenal's 14-game record set in 2002. City's next target - be the next INVINCIBLES.

The Egyptian King also broke quite a few records

Liverpool v Brighton and Hove Albion - Premier League
Salah with his Golden Boot

13) Salah managed to score against 17 different opponents in the league - the most by a single player in a season. He missed against Swansea and United. Score against all 19 next season Salah?

14) Salah became the first PL player to score 40+ goals in all competitions. The last being Cristiano Ronaldo in the 2007/08 season.

15) Salah broke the record of most PL goals scored in a single season - 32 goals (previous best was 31 which was held by Cristiano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez and Alan Shearer). Time to continue this form next season as well.

16) Since the 2013/14 season, Salah is the first Liverpool player to reach double figures for goals and assist. Surely there would be more Liverpool players next season.

17) 4 shots and 4 goals. Salah is the 2nd Premier League player to achieve this feat against Watford after Andrey Arshavin in 2009 against Liverpool.

The managers were also in action

Huddersfield Town v Arsenal - Premier League
Wenger has now beaten 46 different opponents in the PL

18) Arsene Wenger has now managed the most PL games than any other manager (828 games). The previous record was held by Sir Alex Ferguson - 810 games.

19) With a victory on the final day at John Smith's stadium, Wenger has now won in 48 different grounds as a PL manager, again beating Alex Ferguson's 47 grounds. Au Revoir.

20) Frank de Boer lasted as a Crystal Palace manager for just 4 games - the shortest in the PL so far. During his tenure, his side managed to score 0 goals, becoming the first PL manager to witness it. A tenure to forget.

21) For the first time since 2000/01, Mark Hughes has been eliminated from the FA Cup as a manager of 2 different clubs (Stoke and Southampton). The previous manager to do so was Glenn Hoddle with Southampton and Spurs. Not the record Hughes would have wanted.

22) For the first time has a manager managed 7 different clubs in the Premier League - Sam Allardyce with Bolton, Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham, Sunderland, Crystal Palace and Everton. Your bet for his next PL club would be on...?

23) Pep Guardiola is the first Spaniard to win the Premier League. He has now won the league on 7 out of 9 occasions, failing to win with Barcelona in the 2011/12 season and 2016/17 with City. Can he retain the league?

Other Records

Huddersfield Town v Arsenal - Premier League
Lacazette became the 2nd player after Brian Marwood to score in his first 3 home league games since 1988

24) Peter Crouch scored Premier League's 1000th goal with a header. Never forget.

25) Harry Kane's record of not scoring in August continued this season as well. His stats read - 13 games, 898 minutes, 44 shots and 0 goals. Surely not the forward to pick in your FPL for the month of August.

26) Marcus Rashford and his debut goal still a better love story than twilight. The United player has now scored on his Premier League, Champions League, Europa League and EFL Cup debut for the Reds. Oh, he also scored on his England debut as well. No more debut goals left to score so fancy a move...?

27) Jamie Vardy became the first player to score against all the top 6 PL clubs in a single season. Mission accomplished.

28) The fastest ever goal conceded by United came against Spurs when Christian Erikson scored in just 11 seconds. You blink and you miss.

29) Bruno, Brighton's full-back, is the oldest debutant this season (36y 315d). Only player older than him was Graham Alexander (37y 310d) back in 2009 for Burnley. Age is just a number.

30) Georginio Wijnaldum has now scored 18 home league goals but is yet to score away from home - a new PL record. He just loves the home ground.

31) Lewis Dunk, Brighton defender, scored 4 own goals this season. A record also held by Martin Skrtel in 2013-14. Not the goals he would have wanted to score.

32) Kevin De Bruyne became the first player to win the first Premier League Playmaker award of the season with 16 assists. Going right in the history books.

Southampton v Manchester City - Premier League
De Bryune edged past Leroy Sane to win the inaugural Playmaker award

One for the FPL fans...

33) Aubameyang has averaged a goal or an assist every 75.57 minutes in the PL this season. Surely a must-have player in your team next season.

34) Salah now holds the most points scored by a single player in the FPL history - 303 points. You just can't afford to leave him out of your team.
