Premier League 2019/20: 4 big records that could be made/broken

How many more records will Manchester City break this season?
How many more records will Manchester City break this season?

Records are often the highlight for players and clubs alike. These are the milestones that define the stellar years that each had, and the more they have it, the more legendary would be their status in the annals of football.

With Premier League often touted to be the best and the most competitive league in Europe, turning over a corner would always mean something more special.

Since its inception in 1992, so many such records have been made, and so many are broken every season. The pedestal is built only to be broken down. And that's exactly why we share a special connection with the English top-flight - because you never know what lies in store for us.

Just a few hours from now, we'd have the first slice of action from the 2019/20 season, but we know over the course, a lot's going down, especially the records. Here are the top four which could be made/broken:

#4 Sergio Aguero - most hat-tricks in the Premier League

Aguero is one treble away from toppling Shearer's record for most EPL hat-tricks

If there's one player whom you can bet your bottom dollar on for scoring a hat-trick in any season, then that's Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine ace has managed to bag a treble at least once in every calendar year since 2014, taking his overall tally to 11 in the Premier League - the highest amongst any active player.

This incredible record started with Wigan Athletic way back in 2011, before Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle United (twice), Chelsea (twice), Watford, Leicester City, Huddersfield and Arsenal were all devoured in the coming seasons by some of Aguero's finest individual performances.

As outrageous as the distinction is, he currently holds the record jointly with Newcastle legend Alan Shearer in the all-time list. He needs just one more hat-trick to claim it outright.

And you bet he's going to get that this season!

#3 Mohamed Salah - 3 consecutive Golden Boots

Third time lucky for Salah?
Third time lucky for Salah?

Ever since Mohamed Salah returned to the British landscape, he's taken the league by storm with 54 goals in just two seasons with Liverpool.

He set the records straight with 32 strikes in the 2017/18 season - surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry's tally for the most goals in a 38-game season in the Premier League, before netting another 22 times last season.

Suffice to say, Salah claimed the Golden Boot on both occasions - he just had to share it with Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last time out. Now, he stands on the cusp of a huge milestone ahead of the new season.

Should he finish the league's most prolific again this season, Salah will join the elite group of Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer as only the third player to win the Premier League Golden Boot for three successive seasons.

Even though it seems far-fetched given how challenging the last few months have been for him on both fronts - with the club as well as his country, so there's a risk of Salah enervating himself. But it's Salah we're talking of, so anything's possible.

#2 Sergio Aguero - most Premier League goals for a single club

Sergio Aguero has been a part of Manchester City long enough to have a whole book of records dedicated solely to him.

Not only is he the club's greatest scorer, but also an icon. A legend. And the same can be said about him in the Premier League too.

He has 164 strikes in the English top-flight since 2011, currently ranking sixth in the all-time list. However, what many people don't know is that it's also some of the highest figures by a player for a single club.

Former Manchester United great Wayne Rooney currently holds the record for most goals for a single club in the Premier League with 183, followed by Thierry Henry who struck 175 for Arsenal.

Aguero needs exactly 20 more to turn another corner in the league. And not-so-coincidentally, the Argentine ace hasn't scored less than 20 in a season since 2014.

#1 Manchester City - only the second club to win the league thrice in a row

Manchester City are on course to level with Manchester United for three titles in a row!
Manchester City are on course to level with Manchester United for three titles in a row!

The Manchester City team that we've been witnessing since the start of the 2017/18 season has to arguably be the greatest we've ever seen.

There have been the Manchester Uniteds, Chelseas, Liverpools and Arsenals before, each boasting their own unique records - the treble, the double, the Invincibles and yadda, yadda, yadda. But this City side is a phenomenon unlike any.

Having dropped just 30 points in the last two seasons combined, Pep Guardiola's swashbuckling side have broken/made numerous records along the way, most recently becoming the first side ever to claim the 'domestic treble'.

At this rate, many more records are going to tumble and newer milestones will be reached in the 2019/20 season. But a more significant one would be if they win the Premier League for the third time in a row.

The Red Devils are the only team to pull off such a feat before, and they did it twice - from 1998/99 to 2000/01, and then from 2006/07 to 2008/09 - both under Sir Alex Ferguson.

It would be the perfect anti-climax to see their city rivals of all teams equaling their unique record. And it's a real possibility.
