After a strong finish to the previous campaign, Emerson Palmieri jumped above Marcos Alonso in the pecking order. However, an unfortunate hamstring injury to the former Roma player during national duty was enough for Alonso to attain his first Chelsea start of the 2019/20 season.

Starting in his favoured wing-back position, Alonso provided natural width on Chelsea's left side with his trademark crosses. Playing with optimum defensive cover behind him, Alonso managed to form intricate passing triangles with Mateo Kovacic and Mason Mount in the final third of the pitch.

In the 41st minute, the 28-year-old delivered a perfect cross for Tammy Abraham, who headed the ball past Rui Patricio for his second goal. Alonso's best performances in a Chelsea shirt have come under Antonio Conte, who deployed a back three.

Due to his lack of pace and Eden Hazard's poor defensive cover, Alonso struggled during 1v1 situations in Maurizio Sarri's 4-3-3 system. With Emerson facing a long spell on the sidelines, it would be intriguing to watch whether Lampard sticks to his new formation.
