Dele Alli only just signed a new contract with Spurs that will keep him at the club till 2024. However, this wouldn’t have happened had he joined Liverpool – and he came close to joining them before he opted to go to North London.

It turned out to be a great move as he has developed into a great player, something that he wouldn’t have got at Liverpool, according to former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy.

Murphy praised Spurs for the Englishman’s development as they gave him the platform to improve.

“I like Dele Alli, he’s top drawer,” he said.

“Let’s give Spurs some credit here, they’ve given him a platform every week to progress as a young lad coming out of the lower leagues.

“If he had gone to Liverpool, which he nearly did, I’m not sure he would have played as many games.”
